Toyota Transmission Problems? Torque Converter Shudder | Everything You Need to Know

In This Video we discuss a common Toyota transmission problem concerning the Torque Converter Shudder of 2012-2014 Toyota Camry and 2013-2015 Toyota RAV4.

This problem was born from a software issue that caused the torque converter to shudder in the affected models prematurely.

We have a 2012 Toyota Camry with 93,000 miles that suffers from the infamous torque converter shudder that we’re fixing here.

This job can be somewhat of a DIY job if you’re really skilled. I share with you everything you need to know about it including fixing the issue the right way.

Does this apply for a 2012 camry limited edition. I got 54,000 miles

Steve Klassen says:

Thank you so much AMD. You saved my torque converter! I have a 2014 RAV4 and I recently dropped my transmission pan and changed my fluid and I have the 4 magnets in the bottom. I don’t have the shudder issue yet, and my rav only has 83000kms on it, but after watching your video, and looking up the TSB I found that I have the old ecu/tcu calibration ID 342N5000/54204000. I just took it into the dealership and they updated it to 342N5200/54204200. You saved my tranny. Bless you.

Alessandro Todero says:

I have a 2007 fj cruiser which has a similar described problem. Another comment mentioned the 4Runner with the same transmission as the fj, if anyone had the same problem with fj, 4Runner, Tacoma please post your comment with if it’s available the kit number for the parts. Regatds

Richard Salaverria says:

Great informative video as always. Glad my wife and I own a 2018 Rav4 and don't have to worry about this. Is the engine lift cable/pulley tool seen at 12:08 something you can buy? If so, would you mind sharing? I've never seen one like that and I like the self leveling pulley design. Thanks.

John McRae says:

I have a 2014.5 Camry LE, purchased new in July-2014. Since retiring, I don't drive very much – it only has 34K miles. I received the Warranty Enhancement Letter (ZE5) in April-2015. I took it to the dealer for oil changes until April-2016. Would they have done the S/W update at that time? Is there any kind of sticker that would indicate that the S/W update has been done? I haven't noticed any transmission shudder.

Richard Butler says:

What do you think about the instant shutter fix?

Karatekid195ps says:

Is this also common with the v6 I have a 2013 camry with the 3.5l I haven't noticed any shuddering or really anything like that but I have noticed it does like to shift a little early but still smooth also I'm right around 120,000 miles

Richard Chin says:

My Lexus rx350 2015 AL10 has the shudder. Is it the same transmission? It is a 6 speed automatic. Quick search on google shows it’s supposed to have U660. Need your opinion on this. My local mechanic is removing the torque converter.

Daniel Oneill says:

All of my U760E transmission problems disappeared when I replace the Toyota WS junk oil with Castrol Transmax ATF (WS is too thin) and fitted a huge ATF cooler.

Octavio Fuentes says:

My 2013 camry had that problem but toyota dealer fixed with an update or something

aiden wade says:

on a 09 scion xb, the auto trans jerks hard between 2 and 3 intermittently/ 50% of the time. could it be shift solenoid or the valve body? we got a donor car so we can try switching them. transfluid is all clean and full. thx.

Charles Reed says:

As a professional transmission mechanic, I have never pulled the engine to do a torque converter because of shutter I believe it’s faster to pull the subframe and pull the trans even though it will need an alignment, when it’s out changing the front seal may be a good idea and always pre fill the torque converter with fluid maybe 1 quart or so, never put it in dry!

Martin Leos says:

I have a 4 cylinder 2013 carmry, transmission has always shifted really quickly/ealry. Have owned for 9 years & have never had any kind of software update. What is this software called?

Phone says:

how can i verify its the latest updated software

Phone says:

500k miles on my 12 camry se 4 torque converters all oem replaced twice at dealer twice by me wtf i hope they upgraded my software to the latest version the first time i bet they didn't thats why it keeps getting f up

Also Allen says:

Since your a Toyota Lexus specialist, I was wondering if you would know a Nissan Infinity specialist for my 01 Maxima SE

Larry Chase says:

How do I determine if the software update has been done ? 2014 RAV4 with 56000 miles currently. I purchased two years ago from Toyota dealer when it had only 36000 miles… Thank you !!

SlickNick says:

I have this issue with a 2008 GX470. Same exact symptoms. I wonder if this is a widely known issue.

Highwaymen says:

I live in Houston, does anyone know who is the best independent Toyota mechanic? Thanks.

Tsukki _ AMV says:

Please help! I bought my 2012 Camry new and the only issue I have had with it is the torque shutter. Its was "fixed" Dec 2019 at 115k by Toyota with software update and new torque converter. Now at 155k it is doing it again. Toyota said your on your own. I still love he car but not sure if this will work a second time. Toyota found junk in my pan last time and said it needed a new transmission but would only do service bulletin campaign. I would love some advice. If you were located in Kansas, I would love to take my car to you @thecarcarenut.

Danny says:

Great video

Drum Corps Lot says:

Sadly, Toyota no longer covers this maintenance under warranty/recall. I missed the cutoff date by 2 months as it ended the date of car’s manufacture + 8 years. (Mine was February 2012, therefore after February 2020 it’s no longer covered.) I paid $2400 for this repair at a Toyota dealership in April 2020. I was hesitant because of price, but I have had no issues since.

Colt says:

I would have had the bumper repainted while it was off. At a quality body shop
