Any key that is cut correctly will START the car when the master key is nearby it will start, take that master key far away, that old key will NOT start the car…some people put the master key inside the steering housing..and using normal cheap key they carry on the key ring in case it is lost…..

The reason the key started without you programming it, is that when you did, all the keys lost the day before you left it in programming mode, so when you put the new key in it programmed. All you needed to do to stop the light from flashing was turn the ignition on and off 5 times. That's because the computer is waiting for a second key to be programmed. FYI, all Toyotas with a twist key will crank and not start without a chip.
