How Toyota fuel system works : Direct and Port

A Toyota master diagnostic technician explains how Toyota fuel system works. Including Port injection and Direct injection along with service tips.

In this new series on my channel I will take a monumental task of explaining the overly complicated engine computer control for OBD2 emission standard work. I will follow my channel’s theme of simple but complicated to make this information easy to follow and understand for Toyota owners interested.

In part 3 of this series I will cover Toyota’s fuel system. I’ll start with fuel delivery we’ll cover both return and returnless fuel pumps. Then we’ll move to port injection and it’s service tips.

Last but not least I’ll cover direct injectors along with their construction, precautions and service tips.

I worked with Nissan injectors in 1990s vehicles. Seemed guarantee to fail eventually, and overall fuel system more complex than this.

Car care nut, how do I set cam and crank sprockets timing for Toyota 5e fe engine?

Great channel. Thanks for all of the great videos. What engine would you choose for longterm reliability in a 2021 Toyota Corolla? 2.0L or 1.8L? Are Corollas manufactured in Japan better quality than those manufactured in Blue Springs, Mississippi. Thanks!

Matthew Harter says:

Love your content! I'm a Toyota owner for life. Can you please explain dual fuel setups. Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't most late model Toyota/Lexus vehicles port fuel and direct injection?

Alex B says:

AMD I can’t thank you enough for the consistently good content. Thanks for breaking things down and explaining how it works. Your videos have enhanced my knowledge and appreciation for how my Toyota works and why it works so well. Also how I can keep my vehicle running for as long as I own it.
Quick question on the fuel pump. A month ago Toyota send me notification of a recall but said they’d contact me when the fix was ready. Just curious has Toyota issued anything on that yet?

When are u going to do coolant change on 2018 nd up Camry ?

Chad Counts says:

Sir, I have a 2021 Camry and it has a feature that is most unsafe. When I put it in park, the doors unlock…! Is there a way to change this? What were they thinking?

Aamir Yousuf says:

Please do a video on Camry Hybrid 2018-2021 Battery Fan Filter Replacement.

I always feel more educated and informed after watching your amazing videos.

Hats off to your great work. Keep it up!!!

Mobile Communications Network says:

For the newer engines is there a fuel pump pressure sensor?
Or how do you check pressure on the direct injection?

Kevin Armstrong says:

Good tec info on that video I have a2017 hylander v6 with both port and direct injection are you seeing complaints about carbon/soot in the tailpipe .after a long road trip pulling a trailer in mountainous conditions i noticed lots of soot in the tail pipe it was dry but worse than tier 1 diesel it ony has 20 thousand k on it dealer checked fule trims and related systems but had no answers to why it would happen. Is it possible that carbon build up from running on direct injection would be cleared when the port injection kicked in for extra power demand leaving soot in the pipe .at 40 k its back to normal no carbon/soot with normal driving any thoughts? Or places to get information . thanks for doing the videos !

Carlos Márquez says:

Just today I'm in the middle of a diagnosis of a camry a25 fks. With a failure on cold starts, and I'm trying to determine which direct injection injector is failing

rene berdan says:

Hi . Will knowledge on fuel injection system be applicable on my Corolla cross hybrid system?

Marjan Cvetkovic says:

What a wonderful video. It is going just better and better. I would like to ask about fuel ratio. It is magic one 14.7:1. But 2zr-fxe have 13.0:1. Why 2zr-fxe have richer mixture?
