How to Replace Toyota Corolla VVTI Cam Gear

How to Replace Toyota Corolla VVTI Cam Gear

In this video I show how I change a VVT-I cam gear in a 2009 Toyota Corolla. Reason for this repair is a rattle noise at startup from the timing chain. This is a problem that most Toyota Corolla and other similar models with the 2zrfe engine may encounter. I initially installed two cheap Cam Gears that I purchased off of ebay. They were JUNK and did not solve the issue. I took the original gear apart and pinched the springs tighter and re-assembled. This did correct the issue.

Do you know the torque spec to put the bolts back?

Grant Smerchanski says:

Great video…just wondered if there was something you did or marked on the exhaust cam so it did not move during the intake cam removal and install? Thanks again.

Michael Shea says:

What would this repair cost in an independant shop?

Celicagt1zz says:

Thanks Tom, can I use a Cam gear from a 1zz on a 2zz? I think it shows same gear when I look up online. Can I just remove the cam bolts and cam on the intake side or do I need to remove bolts from intake and exhaust cams? Thanks

I have the same issue and am interested in doing this repair. What exactly did you do to the springs? I'd like to use/clean my old cam gear.

william monahan says:

If you still have the car, did the noise come back after bending the springs? I wonder if I just get the whole new gear that it will be better than the original? Toyota brand of course.

Mike Hawbaker says:

If I correctly understand what I saw was, set the gear assembly to the unlocked position, install and torque it on the cam then move it to the locked position before installing back in the head? Great video however a little commentary in the right spots would be a plus, thanks.

Ninja Pete Productions says:

How do you know which one is bad(intake or Exhaust) side?

Turki Al Mutairi says:

I have the same problem
The VVTI Cam has been changed and the sound still present!

Which spring did you adjust. Brass or circle one in piston.

This is the best video I've seen on YouTube for a home mechanic to follow and be able to do a fairly complex repair. This video will save lots of people lots of money if they have the ability. This deserves thousands of up votes and the few down votes mystify me. Excellent work. Thanks again!

Max Otoo says:

Thank for the video. Can you explain further how you rebuild your cam gear? If I got you right, you pinched the and re assembled?

Indalecio Marcelino Jr says:

How ddi you tightened the spring in VVTI?

427 Elevating Productions says:

Reading over your video description on what you did for the original gear perhaps thats what toyota should of done for customers. There are so many posts online though about how the dealers replaced these cam gears free of charge only for the noise to come back.

Kayde Walker says:

Watched this and did one two days ago. Thanks for posting this video

Eric Samara says:

Darrin Doughty says:

How exactly are you turning the chain from the bottom to rotate it?

tonyrockstube says:

Can you change mine for me? 🙂

PawelS says:

Tom did you jack up front end of the car for better access ? I remember when replacing timing chain tensioner gasket I accessed it from the bottom, it was hard from the top

Thanks

I am having this same issue with a 2009 corolla @ 72k miles. Know any good mechanics in the Austin Texas area?

SCRAPE N BASS says:

Anyway to tell which gear is the problem cause from what I understand toyota said it could be either the intake or the exhaust gear that goes bad and needs to be replaced…anyway to know for sure prior to taking it all apart….TIA
