These suck! They are really compact and difficult to get out using the normal press-thru method. You ultimately have to support the yolk and press on it–using your preferred method–to get the caps to pop out.

Nice video, good pointers, I don't think it's a good idea to pound do the yoke like that.

Pounding on the driveline not a good idea. Your video sucks.

Painful to watch. Not how its done at all. Good way to ruin your drive shaft. Go to your local Autozone or Advance and rent the tool to do it right. It takes less than 5 minutes per joint to do these.

Dan Mill says:

Do you have the part numbers? To the u joints?

are e46 u joints replaceable?

K Miller says:

Jeepers – that's sure a tough bit of repair work – every YouTube clip dealing with this 'routine' job shows the same message it's an absolute bar steward to dismantle that UJ and only slightly easier to assemble with a new unit. Easdier to but a complete prop shaft with UJs already fitted. I've just fitted mine in the vice overnight, soaking in penetrating oil, for a big hammer attack tomorrow….surely there must be an easier way to break that joint down?

Thanks, this just saved me a lot of frustration. I couldn't figure out how to get the old caps out. Looks like I just have to beat the shit out of them. 🙂

Thanks for this video! Had this problem on my 2000 4Runner and just got it fixed. It didn't help me fix it in terms of doing it myself, but it helped me diagnose the problem and relay that to the mechanic (and feeling confident in paying a fair price for the right/proper fix). You're awesome!
