some IMPORTANT thoughts after install ps/ac/alternator/timing belts, timing belt tensioner,
waterpump bypass hose, waterpump, FIRST TIME!!!

i purchased item from here
http://www.ebay.com/itm/93-97-Toyota-Corolla-Geo-Prizm-1-6L-Timing-Belt-Water-Pump-Valve-Cover-Kit-4AFE-/280592513334?hash=item41549df936

i purchased ac/ps/alternator belts and waterpump bypass hose locally. bypasshose is around $10 from toyota dealer. worth change now.

this job is not easy for first timer.
this job will strain your back muscle and you need be fit + dont try if you have large hands. minimum 5+ hour job
(it took longer for me as i needed to undo to again to put parts together)
you need to have several tools to accomplish. prepare mechanic or friends in case if you need some tools or help.

use disposable rubber gloves as these parts are dirty and it will be oily if you have oil leaks. 100pcs enough for a job.

i couldnt remove crankshaft sprocket to replace crankshaft seal. i had no tool and this was super tight.

5cm 1/4" extension
10cm 15cm 3/8" extension
50cm 1/2" extension to remove 2x15mm engine mount bottom screws
crankshaft pulley puller (without this, i wouldnt be able to pull out crankshaft pulley. so tight)
1/4" socket set
3/8" socket set
1/2" socket set
25mm or 26mm(26mm better) spanner to rotate camshaft
lift jack
car stand
2 bricks to wedge rear tire
1/2" 50cm breaker bar to loosen 17mm crankshaft pulley and 2x15mm engine mount bottom screws

hammer to install new camshaft seal / 4x sparkplug seals(wedge nail puller to pull out old sparkplug seals. so easy)
gasket sealer to put small amount on engine head cover. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Permatex-Ultra-Black-Hi-Temp-RTV-Silicone-Gasket-Maker/16777009

wheelbearing grease for crankshaft pulley puller and put it on crankshaft pulley hole(in case if you need to pull out again after 100000 km)

1mm thick 3cm-5cm metal scrapper to hammer down between engine head cover to open. this took 30mins to open.

still want to continue? good!

TAKE PHOTO OR VIDEO when possible. this will be great backup.

WRITE DOWN IN ORDER everything you've done. this will save you hours++.

CHECK TENSION OF PS,AC,ALTERNATOR,TIMING BELTS. sometimes these tensions are better(old cars) than the one on manual.

PUT BOLTS in the hole of removed parts OR original hole. you dont need to worry about leftover bolts later.

after remove left engine mount and belts, then pull up engine more to get the space to remove 4x10mm bolts on waterpump pulley.

when you REMOVE WATERPUMP, 3litres+ of coolant will leak. make sure you have wide basket to collect coolant.

FREE POWER STEERING PUMP to wedge 2x metal hose clamp from waterpump bypass hose. these clamps are super strong.

again WRITE DOWN IN ORDER everything you've done. TAKE PHOTOS AND VIDEO. this will give you piece of mind and save you hours++.

———————————————————————————————————————————–
mark timing belt and pulley. put a new one. rotate camshaft with 26mm spanner. 1 rotation of camshaft will be 2 rotations of crankshaft.
MAKE SURE CRANKSHAFT PULLEY POSITION IS CORRECT AFTER 2 TURNS(1turn for camshaft)
MARKS ON TIMING BELT WILL NOT ALIGN ON PULLEYS once you rotate camshaft. as long as crankshaft pulley aligns after 2turns(1turn for camshaft)
YOU ARE DOING RIGHT.
———————————————————————————————————————————-

once you get right timing, make sure you WEDGE TIMING BELT TENSIONER with long metal bar(long screwdriver or prybar) TO TENSION TIMING BELT.
this is important

put everything back together, FILL COOLANT, turn engine on+heater max, pump upper and lower coolant hoses to remove any air bubble.
this will take 20+mins.

check engine sound, any unusual noises, turn off engine immediatly and contact mechanic or friends who can help.

congratulations. you made it.

thank you very much to peter, without his videos, i wouldnt be able to finish this job.

ps. next time, i will just bring my car to mechanics and pay them to do it.
even though i saved around $200~, but stress and time i spent on this project is much more than that.
great experience though.

i installed new cambelt with all the markings but my car wont start the engine.

what could be the problem?

4afe engine with white marks done on both top and bottom pulleys

could it be tensioner?

Hello Peter Finn!

Your video inspired me alot.. its pretty long but very informative. You are a mechanic with soul and mind.. i wish that more youtubers would be like you. Its very time intensive to find good videos here, because the most videos on youtube are just crap.

best greetings & keep on going!!!!!!!!!! 🙂

Do to your good willing to show timing belt replacement of toyota corolla I could do the same in my Toyota. I notice through your videos that you know very well Toyota Corolla. I have the following problem: The buzzer of the warning lights on does not work. Probably it is a problem related to a relay.I know there are several relays near the clutch but I do not know which is the right one. Can you help me with that ? It is a corolla year 1998 liftback.1.4.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation.
