How to replace the alternator on a 1.8L Toyota Corolla, Matrix, Yaris, Scion xD and Pontiac Vibe

This video covers removal and installation of the alternator on Toyota’s 1.8L Corolla, Matrix, Yaris as well as the Scion xD and Pontiac Vibe. This is a good project for the home mechanic with some basic tools. On camera is a 2010 Toyota Corolla. This particular engine was used from 2009-2013.

FYI, Avoid doing this job in cold weather if you can.. I tried to "pop off" the plastic cover on the engine and it crumbled like a cracker… Great video though. Thanks..

I know this was 3 years ago but there is like a one inch lip above the crank. Kinda between the crank and alternater. Do you know whether the belt goes over or under it?

sergio pabon says:

Just changed my alternator. Works perfect. I wrote down the instructions. Also did the index card. It helped.

I noticed that if you use locking pliers to hold the belt down you don't have to remove it all the way. And it won't unravel.

In this day of thanks. I thank you for making this video.

Stupidly I decided to tighten all bolts and then do the tensioner bolt. Snapped it right in half. Should've looked up this video first. Lesson learned

D-S-L L says:

no need to total take off the belt, only upper part off is ok.

Shabazz Ray says:

What the make, model and part # of the alternator that you used? Thanks.

MotoButt3rz says:

This is a great video and a great help but I ran into one small issue. the 12mm that is shown at 1 minute 43 seconds, the head broke off so the bolt is in the old alternator. I need to get the specs for the bolt. I tried to get one from the parts store but it did not fit. I called the dealer and they were able to give me the specs they have but it was the same as what I bought that did not fit.

Thank you for your video, but corrects the drawings, it is water pump and not the polite idler

Carson Lau says:

Thanks OM! This was very helpful for my 2009 Scion XD. It was tricky getting the alternator out of that tight space, but at all worked out fine.

Easily the best video of this procedure on YT.
