One of the solutions to solar not supplying power at night is for the solar panels to use its power during the day to use electrolytes of water to create hydrogen and store it. Then at night use the hydrogen in this same process to create electricity. The cost of using electrolysis currently is not on par with just using NG. However, there are now plants being build using solar that is almost at the same cost as NG. Once this system is efficient you will start to see hydrogen cars take off as you are really using solar to drive your car. Also you can create the hydrogen locally instead of using pipeline to a processing plant. Funny part is one of the big investors of this technology is Exxon.
Technology can improve the range and cost of electric as well as the charging. Hydrogen has fundamental issues that technology can't solve. Liquid hydrogen is inefficient to produce, transport, and store owing to thermodynamics. Storage and filling requires advanced (and pricey) high-maintenance equipment, including cryonics and computer-controlled interlocks during refuel, and it always will.
This is a great technology but for 2 problems. The first being that hydrogen is highly explosive, far more so than petrol and diesel. a tank with enough hydrogen in it to be practical would have enough explosive power to rip a car to pieces and it is many times more reactive than hydrocarbons. The second problem which is a killer is very simple, there is no effective distribution or production system unlike petrol or electricity both of which have highly developed production and distribution facilities that have taken over 100 years to develop.
