DIY: Door Stuck Shut: Toyota Truck Tacoma 4Runner

People take their driver’s door for granted…until it gets stuck shut! This 2004 Toyota Tacoma is suffering from the stuck-shut door problem.

Let’s see if we can get the door open and fix the problem without too much blood sweat or tears, and get this sweet truck back on the road!

Enjoy!
Ivan

Question; I have a 1998 Toyota Tacoma. My outside door handle does not work.. (The handle has no tension. raises very easy).. I had my (sorta mechanic ) friend look at it, He took off my door panel. and advised me that it was an Electrical problem . ( However he did not have a mirror, and couldn't see the hidden back )… My friend showed me , and pointed to the visible linkage , saying all the rods were connected.. But having seen "This Video",, i'm thinking its gotta be that Spring.. Any thoughts ???? Thanks šŸ™‚

Can someone please tell me what size the spring is that I need. I have 2003 Toyota Tacoma and the passenger door lock is stuck. I'm assuming that this is the problem. A couple of years ago I had to replace both door handles. Sure wish I had known about this darn little spring then. But the parts stores say they can't get it. I don't want to take the thing apart and then not be able to drive because I don't have anyone to help me. Don't know if I will be able to close the door once it's all apart Went to harbor freight here as someone in the comments stated they got assorted pack of springs but ours didn't have any. But I'm thinking there's another store here kinda like farm supply that I bought a spring with to fix my recliner. Maybe they'll have the size I need. Thanks

Thanks so much. Would have never gotten it fixed without this video. Took me exactly 2 hours including reinstalling the spring and running to ace

Thank you for showing how to get the door open so I can continue. That spring that broke was a bugger!!!! But I finally got it open, thanks to you and others on you tube!!! Touche my friend! I have a new latch now, but will get a spring for future issues!

Thank you Pine Hollow! The spring in my door was fine but winter brings out any possible problems, the linkage just needed some oiling. I'm grateful to have come across this video. My door suddenly wouldn't open in a store parking lot, climbing over the center counsel made me miss the old style bench seats, I found this video on my phone while sitting yet in the parking lot and just knowing I could do this myself made me feel better. The most time consuming part for me was loosening the two back bolts for the drivers seat, they were rusty and tight. I don't have a garage so doing it outside on a 12 degree F day this January made my patience short, low patience and cold plastic while scrunched up in the back seat area also attributed to breaking the main control for windows and locks while loosening the door panel. I did find a new one on ebay for $22 and its coming in a few days. And, Thank you to youtube for helping spread good information like this.

Have to remove the seat ?

I'm needing this spring, but I noticed the electronic connectors (attached to the bottom of the opening you're working on), are corroded badly where they meet. What's the name of the part or connectors so I can correctly order or purchase them..

Huge help!! Son spent hours trying to figure it out. Watching your video and 5 minutes later we got door open. It was indeed a broken spring!!

Joseph Vogel says:

Great video. I was hoping to find another solution but I'm very happy to see your success. Now I know removing the seat will not be a total waste of time. Thanks

I haven't commented on a youtube video in like a decade, and I'm not a car guy by any means, so I wanted to say thanks for saving me $X,XXX with this video.

Thank you sir. Subbed

Letty Rodriguez says:

I'd like to know where you found the spring. I have a similar problem but I don't want to spend $400.00 for the latch at the Toyota dealer. The dealer doesn't have the spring to sell.
Thanks

Guess what happened to my '04 Tacoma today? I'm glad you posted this video.

This video saved my ass when my 2001 Tundra driver's side locked me out. Took out the bench seat as recommended, bent the side panel enough to clear the carpet then lifted it enough off the window-door edge to gain access. Finally located the reach around area to hold down and moved the lever with the other hand for release. Had more problems releasing the plastic retainers on (2) rods to remove the entire assembly.

BEFORE doing all the hassle of working from the inside, find a tow truck or body shop with a slim jim (that knows how to use it) and try to get the door open from the outside…….. The tow truck driver I called worked tried for 15 min with no luck, while I got it open in less than 2, using his tools…. Just sayin. Go for the easy open first, which is much less work….

Very helpful information, but can you show a photo of the spring configuration, since the spring on my unit is gone.

Thanks for this video. I did the repair today on my 2002 Tacoma with 277K miles on it…and was able to recycle the old spring. $0 cost for the repair!
