This 6 part series walks through the very detailed procedure for diagnosing and replacing a cracked cylinder head and head gasket on a 1995 Toyota Tacoma with the 3.4 liter 5VZ-FE V6 engine.
This engine was widely used by Toyota from the mid 1990’s through 2004 in the Tacoma, Tundra, T-100, 4Runner, and Land Cruiser. Therefore, this repair procedure should be common to all of those vehicles with the same engine.
Due to the detail presented in this video series, it is also a good reference for doing other repairs such as changing the antifreeze/coolant, timing belt, valve cover gaskets, camshafts, alternator, spark plugs, spark plug wires, ignition coil packs, vacuum hoses, exhaust manifolds, belts, hoses, cooling fan, and various intake gaskets.

From the toyota dealership: "The head bolts are non stretch bolts"
Just out of curiosity. Do I meed to resurface my Cylinder head? The only reason I am replacing is due to oil leak. Im using MLS Head Gaskets. Your knowledgeable response would be helpful thank you!
it sucks boy it is boring why don't you call your channel the boring things hahaha
Thanks for this these videos
You put gasket maker on the oil passage of the caps that hold the seals. I thought that the manual said not to.
What diameter are the lifter shims? I had one guy tell me 28mm and another tell me 34mm. Thanks.
take it and have it magnaflux at a machine shop.its cheep insurance
Replace a head gasket and you will learn the true meaning of the phrase "easier said than done".
Man, thank you for this series, very well done. We are here in my garage trying to figure out why it’s running rough after reassembly from head gasket replacements. On the passenger side our 2 dots are lined up but it’s 180 out on the timing belt marks. Pulling what little hair out trying to figure out what’s wrong….help! Please
You, sir, are a gentleman and a scholar.
Excellent how to . Doing same setup on a 1995 honda odyssey ex with timing belt failure. 4 bent valves. 300,000 miles on it. Head still at machine shop
I agree with everybody this is the best video on how to do it step by step thanks for the video
Hey there. Finally got my cylinder head back from the machine shop. Can you please link me to where you purchased this gasket set? Can't seem to find looking it up by the brand name and part on the package.
Hey there @worsethanchiggers , do you recall which ebay seller you purchased that remanned head from? I'm in the same boat as you at the moment. Much appreciated.
Any chance you can give me the part number off of your idle up valve (vsv) on the front of the engine.
Thanks you
Hey worsethanchiggers, Thanks for the great video series. I used them for reference to pull my 1995 4runner left cylinder head. Getting ready to order a replacement in the next day or 2. Have you had any issues with only replacing the one cylinder head not both?
This video is pure excellence , this video should win a award!
You may have mentioned this in the video but what size wrench do you use for camshaft im finishing my head replacement and cant turn the intake camshaft to force the exhaust one down.
do you recall where you got your pulley holder? been happy with it?
Awesome video! I was wondering what book are you using?
I have 250k on my 2001 4 runner. Legendary motor
Sir, I have a question when you remove the cylinder valve did you have to compress the valve springs?
this is the best head gasket HOWTO video on youtube.

Since Toyota discontinued the Head Gasket Kit, i have had a hard time finding what all parts (gaskets, seals, etc) that will need to be replaced during this Head Gasket job. You wouldn't happen to have a list of the parts still? I know its been awhile and i dont expect that you do, never hurts to ask!
Very helpful videos! Question: Did you need a special tool to remove the springs/keepers or did you just hammer them off?
So you made sure the dots on the cam were aligned before removing…but on install you line up the dots and then rotate cams to push the cam down into place which then caused your cams to be out of alignment. Another great video ruined by missing a critical step…
That head gasket didn't look stock
