2008 Toyota Matrix & Corolla Spiral Cable / Clock Spring – DIY – ABS Light Fix

http://danthefixitman.org/2008-toyota-matrix-corolla-spiral-cable-clock-spring-diy-abs-light-fix/
Just a quick video on how I replaced a spiral cable or clock spring on a 2008 Toyota Matrix. The ABS Light was on, and the dealer told the owner that he needed a new spiral cable for around $620 installed. Please click my website link in the description to get the part from Amazon.com
This is the same as many other Toyota models, and should be the exact same as the Toyota Corolla. Pretty easy job, just make sure to disconnect the battery before working on or around the airbag.
Tools needed:
T30 torx bit
small flathead screwdriver
No.2 Phillips screwdriver
Steering wheel puller (may not be necessary)
10mm wrench to disconnect negative battery cable

Thanks for watching!

You saved me $350 that I didn't have! Thank you for taking the time to create, edit, narrate and upload this video!

Hola, gracias por el video, realice el trabajo en 40 minutos, todo quedo perfecto y por fin se apago la luz del airbag inmediatamente después de la instalación, saludos

thank for the video, this should work with 2003-2008 Matrix and Corolla also

Thanks. Gonna tackle this on my 04 XRS. I went and grabbed one at a junkyard from a pretty low mileage matrix. Can't afford new toyota…and figure I'd rather take a chance in a used toyota part than some of the super cheap stuff you see online (literally seen then for $35).

Awesome video man! Thank you so much! You went through it step by step and all I did was pause the video at every step, you're awesome!

How long does it take for the dash light to turn off? Mine is still on after replacing it

what does the orange stem do?

Thanks Dan for the video. Was able to do it in 40 mins following your video! One question tho. Should the airbag light go away right away? Mine still on after driving around for a couple mins.

The dealerships want $200 for labor and $500 for the part! Why!? I'm a DIYer so am I able to do this? Will it affect anything else?

Great video!! Really appreciate you taking the time to do this, and it was a huge help. Two things that I learned while doing this.

1. You’re not kidding about the Torx screws being tough to get out. I actually had to shave some plastic away from the insertion point to finally get them far enough out. One of the trickier parts of the process.
2. Be VERY, VERY careful when putting the yellow plug on the base of the clockspring. The pins inside are very thin and flimsy and they’re super easy to bend if you don’t get the plug lined up properly. Found that out the hard way. Luckily I was able to straighten things out and made it work, but I should have been more careful.

Happy to be driving again without the light on!

This is why I only buy Honda’s now. Stupid shit doesn’t break on em like Toyota’s.

Thank you for this video! You gave a perfect explanation and it was far better than the others i had to sit through before finding yours.

Tip for others about to tackle this: My local dealership wanted $800 for just the Clock spring part but i found it new on Amazon for $17.
