Subaru XV Crosstrek Spark Plug Replacement Is An Easy DIY Job

Subaru XV Crosstrek Spark Plug Replacement Is An Easy DIY Job

Don’t let the dealership scare into thinking that the spark plugs replacement requires disassembling the engine or lifting the engine up in the engine bay. In this this video I replace all four spark plugs with NGK replacements and Clean up the battery. The spark plugs do require a special or different spark plug socket than we are used to seeing in the past. These cars have a 14mm hex on the spark plug instead of the 5/8th of most vehicles. I use a Snapon Tools 14mm Spark plug socket and a 3″ wobble extension to gain easy access to the NGK spark plug recessed in the depth of the cylinder head.

I ended up paying someone to do the plugs on my 99 Outback due to extremeely low clearance – I thought they would have some special tool – when I picked it up and asked, a guy came around the corner and said "these are the tools" and showed me his bloody knuckles and the two u-joints needed to make the corner. πŸ™‚ LOL. Anyway this is WAY easier; not paying anyone to do this job on our 2014 Crosstrek!!! Excellent video!! (I'll spec for 2 hours between getting my tools together and sipping on a sweet barley pop!)

Matt Anderson says:

Super happy to have found this video! Other subaru sparkplug videos are either so poor production quality it might as well have been on a early 2000 razor flip phone or were just straight garbage. Very excellent demonstration, will definitely be doing this myself!

Jenna Housley says:

I was quoted $900 for a 60k mile service. I asked the mechanic what is involved in a 60k service? Their answer was "changing spark plugs and some fluids." I'd like to try this myself and save the money. I have zero mechanical knowledge. Should I try? Is there something along the way that I could damage because I don't have the knowledge? Also… do you know what fluids they are referring to? The only thing I see in my maintenance booklet that needs to be replaced is brake fluid. But after watching this video, I think it's outrageous for me to pay $900 for this job, plus some brake fluid. Any advice?

Nathan Kinzel says:

Yes I just took my Crosstrek in for its 24k mile service. The dealership charged me $270. They told me the 30k mile service would be around $1000. Now I remember why I do my own service. Thanks for this video. My biggest concern was getting to theos plugs. I see its not that hard.

Ronald Cariaga says:

Thanks for video! Just in time for my 60k maintenance. Did you gap the spark plugs?

Ian Docena says:

Muchos gracias for this! It’s such a relief that it’s a lot simpler than I thought! Cheers mate

Robert Weber says:

For you Crosstrek guys, any thoughts or feedback? Sorry for the crosspost.
