08-17+ Subaru Impreza (Base, WRX and STI) Steering rack rebuild. [Frugal Garage EP5]

One of the most common issues on the Impreza is a leaking steering rack. Everybody just replaces the entire rack but I wanted to see if I could fix it with $50 worth of seals. Well here’s how to do it!

Subaru seal kit part number: 34191AG050

reseating the collar is a bit more than a tap with a hammer.. I managed to use 2 pieces of 1/8 aluminum (from my hand rail on my deck, any sturdy flat metal surface should work) and placed one over the larger open end and one ontop of a socket for the smaller end (socket that fit inside the hole, then used a C-Clamp to 'press' the collar and old seal out, (note, it WILL destroy the old seal).. should be able to do same to press collar back in but will need a deep well (longer socket to go into the larger end of the housing opening)… i tried the socket and extension and a 2 pound hammer and tried several times, could not get collar to seat…

Michael Moran says:

based on reviewing the video, you stated that the collar is pressed in/out… gave me an idea (as I don't have a press) to use a c-clamp to push out… hope it works.. thanks again

Michael Moran says:

on a side note. when I removed the housing, the entire assembly came out from the spider gears on the back side of the main larger seal.. I had to re-seat, I made sure that I marked the alignment on the spline shaft, so that when I put back in, It was still lined up. then pulled the snap ring and replaced larger seal… just an fyi..

Hey Frugal. got one more question about the seals in the rack n pinion in the above video. I got unit out, lines broke loose, and bigger seal replaced, but on the smaller inner seal in the housing, how do you get that (collar/metal ring) out in the first place ( at time mark 12:17) you already have the ring out and are showing putting the seal back in and how it goes in and then the collar (what you call it)? thanks for an answer… and again.. REALLY truly appreciate you putting up THIS video. subscribed… thanks again

dropping of little one to school this am, cop friend also dropping off his kid, mentioned that I needed to update my inspection sticker. off to dealership, they found my rack was leaking, quoted me about 800 for new rack and about 3 hrs labor at 90/hr. growing up, dad (love my dad) taught me how to work on cars. so from dealership back home, no passy inspection (yet), and off to youtube.
Found your video. DUDE. YOU ARE A LIFE SAVER… just a quick question or 2. 1: how long to remove and re-install rack? and is there only the 2 seals. 2: do you have a link to the exploded view diagram for the rack from which you found the part no.s…
Again, many many many thanks for doing this video. on a side note, i have an oil pan leak as well and from your video I now know that getting to it will not be very hard, I thought that that cross beam was more difficult to remove and may have needed an engine support. but your video will save me time as well on that note. I also have 1 other question.
I will be pulling my oil pan to fix leaking rtv compound(as a there is no gasket for my 2008 subaru wrx, that I can find). do you have a video on fixing an oil pan leak, if not, what would you recommend to use if no gasket, just go with RTV compound or is there something better. Thanks in advance for any reply.

apart from the flight, were there other symptoms?
Noisy steering pump?

MoveOverSamayo says:

Does it matter if the whole spindle comes apart from the rack. Mine came out with the top portion after I loosened everything and I had to slowly coax it back into place.

Jose B says:

I have the same leak on my 2011 wrx. I check it out last night and it’s leaking at the bottom. Is the seal kit part number the same?
