I found this Kit on E-Bay which includes: Service kit for replacing input and output shaft nuts on Saturn S-series TAAT automatic transmission exhibiting reverse slam, slipping gears and other problems. Kit includes special clutch holding tool, input shaft nut, output shaft nut, cover gasket and 23mm thin wall socket. Nuts and gasket are genuine GM/Saturn parts. The kit is $80.00, a kit is also sold that does not include the socket for $70.00. E-Bay item #: 140992981894 as of 6/9/2013.

I own a 2000 Saturn SL2, do I need to replace the valve-body and retorque the input shaft nut? I currently don’t have any problems with the transmission slamming into reverse, but wasn’t sure if either might be a problem in the future?

To make it easier, I would replace the valve body first. You can purchase a rebuilt one online for around $200.00 (make sure they use sonnex parts!!). You can do this without a mechanic. No need to lower the transmission…etc.

I found the 23 mm thin wall socket on amazon from armstrongand it fits right out of the package…Armstrong 38-323 23mm, 12 Point, 3/8-Inch Drive Metric Deep Socket..Hope this helps…Topseyturv

I replaced the valve body because that is the root of the problem. I have done some research and find out that the GM valve body has a faulty design and need to be corrected by re-drilling the valve body in order to channel enough fluid so it can have enough line pressure to engage into reverse without delay and slamming. Anyway, this company call “Sonnex” will provide better explanation. The loose input shaft nut is the result of a bad valve body.

Why do you need to replace the valve body??? Does the solnoid go bad or what is the problem in valve body that causes no reverse??? I have a saturn with no reverse that i purchased and i will pull the side cover off to see if nut is loose but am curious if i tighten nut should i have reverse or do you have to replace reverse solnoid???? Just trying to do some research any input thanks

Hey Mark,
It is not a deep wall, but it must be a thin wall 12 points. It not, you have to grind it down with a hand held grinding tool (which I did).

Yes. This is a very important piece of tool in my opinion. Hope this help. As of now, my Saturn has no more reverse slam. I can drive it for miles until the fluid gets hot. Stop the vehicle and put it in reverse. No slam, no delay 🙂 Again, I had put in a rebuilt valve body as well as re-torqued these two nuts.
