How to Install a Region Free BIOS and Modchip in Your Saturn

In this video, I show how to install a region free BIOS and a Phantom Universal modchip into a Sega Saturn! The region free BIOS lets you play imported games without the need of a region unlock cart or a region switch. It basically lets you play any region game you want with no extra hassles. The modchip lets you play burned copies of any Saturn game you ever wanted to play! These two mods in tandem unlock a multitude of games you would normally not have access to due to cost and region restrictions. It basically makes the Saturn more badass than it already is.

Want to purchase a region free BIOS or a modchip? You can get them here. Written installation instructions are also available for download:

Any reason you can't piggyback the new bios EPROM on top of the existing PROM, and just remove the leg for the enable on the bottom one?  Seems like that would save some time/effort… and would make it revertable… or at least you could have a switch to change bioses if you wanted to… (which chip's enable is wired to the mainboard.)

Thank you for the video, and the links. I think i'm finally going to do a full mod on my Saturn… new bios, modchip..  I've had mine since 1996, and back then i added a switch for US/JP region detection.  This past week, i added a button on the back to bypass the tray open switch, for doing the swap trick… but I really want an internal modchip.  Oh, and i also wired in RCA and S-Video outputs behind the trapdoor. 😀

Most Capcom fighters use the 4MB to run or to add smoother frame rates FYI.

Hello I bought a phanthom chip for my saturn and I wanted to bounce the bios and leave the regions free as I did not play the games, and tried to patch the games and canviar region but it does not work the only solution is canviar bios I think and leave the Free regions, the problem esque I do not find any place where they sell the bios programmed for my saturn, if I could provide some website where I can buy it would be of great help thanks

BlayzedBlue says:

I'm planning on getting a mod chipped Saturn. Games have gotten way too expensive. I want to play Hyper Duel ans Panzer Dragoon Saga without spending $1000.

SkyYuyo says:

Just curious looks like there are two bios chips a DIP & SMD version. What exactly does that mean?

AndehX says:

Just did this mod yesterday, I soldered my wires to the capacitors instead of the chip legs on the bios. a little easier.

Lawrence Carter says:

sir you made a good channel with amazing content, you got new sub, thx.

Tobey Peters says:

Maybe use dabs of hot glue to secure chip corners down, instead of tape, or use the yellow transparent tape.

Jarod Roach says:

I just got a Saturn and my little nephew was freaking out about it. He wants to borrow it. That's fine and all, I trust him with the HARDWARE, but I do NOT trust him with my SEGA SATURN GAME CASES. He will absolutely destroy them, and probably scratch up my games if I put them in a CD book.

Solution?

This!

Thanks for uploading, definitely gonna get both of these when payday rolls around again

I just bought a 50pk of Verbatim CD-R the other day. $14 @ Best Buy. Verbatim CD-R and DVD-R are all I use to burn. Never all issue. The Philips Mini DVD-R are really good for the Gamecube after a pot tweak.
