Today on our 2006 Saturn Vue we’ll be installing the Draw-Tite Hitch part number 36408. Now here’s what our hitch looks like installed on our vehicle. Next we’ll go ahead and give you a couple measurements to help you select some accessories for your hitch such as a ball mount, a bicycle rack or a cargo carrier. From the center of the hitch pin whole to the outer most edge of the bumper is approximately 4 inches. From the top of the opening in the receiver tube to the ground is approximately 13 1/2 inches. Now let’s go ahead and install out hitch. To begin with lets go ahead and point out the locations that we use to mount our hitch to the vehicle. As you will see there are two weld nuts on each side, both the passenger and the driver side, as well as two holes at the center of the rear bumper bracing.

These two holes will have to have a carriage and a spacer block fish wired into them. For the two center locations we’ll be using the 1/2 inch carriage bolt with the spacer block and a conical tooth washer, making sure that the teeth face toward the hitch when installed. Finally, a 1/2 inch hex nut will be used as well. For the four side mounting locations we’ll be using a 12mm bolt and a conical tooth washer, making sure again that the teeth face towards the hitch when installed. Before we can start we need to clean out the existing weld nuts. We’ll do this by using some spray lubricant and a nylon tube brush, part number 814092. It’s a good idea once you’ve cleaned out the threads to make sure that the bolts will go into each of the weld nuts fairly easily.

It’s a good idea to get an extra set of hands to help you raise the hitch up into position. Be careful not to push the carriage bolts back up into the bumper structure. We found it easiest to put the nut and the washer on a 2 center carriage bolt to help you hold the hitch in place while you install the remaining hardware. We can now tighten down each bolt. Then we’ll torque it to the manufacturer’s specification. That’ll finish it for our installation of the Draw-Tite hitch part number 36408 on our 2006 Saturn Vue.
