theSAABguy Repairs: 2002 SAAB 9-5 Blower Motor or Fan Speed Controller

In this video I replace a Fan Speed Controller on a 2002 SAAB 9-5. I began the job believing it could just be the blower motor (which is easier), but after p…

Thanks to the help of this video i just swapped my blower motor out also, however only the defrost vents closest to the window on the dash are blowing out air… the air is cool but i would like the vents on my console/above glove box ect to work. what could this be? im thinking it has something to do with the fan door maybe? Id appreciate the help, thanks

Can you post a video featuring the evap valve location on a saab 9-5 2002 4 cyl please my check light engine came on and thats the reason I want to see if its easy to repair myself before spending money to get it checked and fixed

This is why I do this- save people money!

Just completed this job with the aid of this video. I’m no gearhead so I would never have attempted otherwise but this video was incredibly helpful. Thanks for saving me money.

leigh husker says:

fuck it, just disconnect it, plug in your new one then just get some self tapping screws, and drive it into the sheet metal of the right foot well behind the glove box…

leigh husker says:

wow, a right angle adaptor with an extension, jeez. could saab made it any more of a pain in the ass, so do they just jam shit in wherever they can find the extra space, either way, maybe it has to do with these being retrofit with a/c units. its against the law in sweden to have a/c with coolant in the cars. probably most of northern europe as well…

Hi! I finally had some time and managed to complete the job of replacing the controller. I realized that the red part of the connectors just pops out and they come apart easily. Otherwise it a hell of a job, especially tackling the screws which hold the controller body in place high in the drivers footwell and feeding the cable with its connectors and grommets from one footwell over the fan to the other.
Thanks again for your video!
Vladimir

guess its common issue. my controller is screwed too. i have to push down on the knob to get it going on 3 or 4. (fan speed). and if i dont hold it down it will turn off…so it obviously needs to b replaced. ill pick 1 up at the junk yard when i get out there. since my a/c aint workin ATM i dont have a need 4 it. im gonna start video blogging my repairs on my saab too.

Vladimir Radulovic says:

Thank you very much for this video – it’s just what I needed.
I would have one question – how do you disconnect the connectors in the passenger footwell? Do you have to press on the red pieces? I started the job yesterday and I couldn’t get them apart. I wouldn’t like to break anything.

This video was a big saver! It was more than just helpful, IT WAS AWESOME! I got quoted thousands to replace. My fan was very intermittent, bust mostly off! The only thing I would add would be if you don’t have one of those cool snake tips, disconnect the the accelerator pedal, gives some room to use a 1/4″ drive ratchet. On the passenger side I removed the glove box go give me more room. Saab Guy you are the best

I have a challenge for you. My 2003 saab 9-3Linear has an issue where at night the center console ( radio, heat controls, steering wheel controls) stays dark and in the day time it lights up. If I shine a flashlight at the Dome on top of the Information display on the dash, everything comes on but as soon as the light goes off it all goes dark again… Is this some kind of a sensor issue?

1995RangeRover says:

this is a lot more involved than the 9000…yeesh!! thanks for sharing!!!

Alan Myers says:

Thanks. Exactly what I needed to see. I didn’t realize you could remove the wiper-assembly bracket directly over the blower. And I think my problem is really the speed controller — which I didn’t even know about.

One thing I discovered though, which could make the process a little easier on your back: It turns out the hood comes off very easily! Three nuts on each side, pop off the gas-struts, and you can set the hood aside. (It’s easy, but it’s really a two-person job.)

Thanks for the video it was very helpful. I have a 2002 9-5 linear and on cold mornings or damp mornings when I try starting my car, it’ll turn on for 1-2 seconds then shut off.. for those 1-2 seconds that it is on, it has a rough idle. Any idea as to what I can do or what it might be? When its driving or idling, its smooth, its only rough for those few seconds on morning starts. Thanks.

You can drop the gas tank. It sit inside and is mounted on top. Or, you can remove the back seat. The lines for electrical and gas will be evident here with a small access hole. You can use power metal snips to enlarge the hole so that the fuel pump can be removed and replaced. The pump needs to be turned about a quarter turn clockwise I think to remove the pump and the opposite to replace the new pump. I found some pictures online but don’t have the site handy.
