Van Svenson says:

With the starter removed, I can access the gear teeth on the flywheel to
“lock” the crankshaft into position to keep cylinder #1 at TDC.

SuperDagod1 says:

Also why do you need to remove the starter, is it because it plugs into the
gears which are also attached to the main system up front? How much would
it cost to pay someone to do this?

XJ12lover says:

How often would you have to do maintenance like this with the water pump,
and the timing stuff on a 88 n/a 944 daily driver?

SuperDagod1 says:

Why do you need to find top dead center? Sorry if this is a stupid question?

Van Svenson says:

Well, these are 25 year old cars, so even a great example, which might run
you $8-12k, will have things get old and fail in the next 100k miles.
Generally, it’s recommended to change the timing belt every 4 years or
40,000 miles – whichever comes first.

Vore667 says:

I wish I could work in ffd like you 😉

SuperDagod1 says:

Before I go buy a very nice 944 porsche from the 80’s. How reliable is this
vehicle. I would put another 100k on it. How often does the water pump go
bad or axle bearings or radiator? or sensors or just general stuff? How
hard is it to change the spark plugs? Or the tranny, how long does it last
and how much to get fixed? Thanks a bunch. Rob

pitchmod says:

I just got very afraid of my 944. I

XJ12lover says:

@vsvenson thanks, i was looking into buying an 88 i found near me to use it
as a daily driver since it gets better gas mileage than my mustang. Wasnt
sure how long i could drive before having to fix one or both.

im glad to see this man is using the more expensive latex gloves! gr8
choice. How many pairs were required for this job.

Thanks so much for an awesome tutorial!

Matthias Jeserich says:

Greeting from Berlin/ Germany

Richard Jarosch says:

To Van, I just finished changing my 1990 944S2 Timing Belt and Balance
Belt. Your video was so helpful and informative, and gave me the confidence
to do this job myself. I especially like the way you set the tension for
the timing belt and balance belt. Another tip for setting the timing
belt-if you can turn the water pump pully with medium effort, it is set at
the right tension. Thanks again.

cowbell808 says:

Excellent tutorial, thank you very much.

zestydude87 says:

very very helpful. thanks

Van Svenson says:

Just a screwdriver that I bent. 🙂

Brian Badel says:

This is exactly what I need. You are awesome beyond belief.

bradgrylls says:

Man! He sure can take that apart quickly!

hally1972 says:

Thanks Van!

Van Svenson says:

There are marks on the cam gear and the balance shaft gears… they need to
be in exactly the right orientation while cylinder #1 is at TDC for
everything to work correctly.

MayhemIncLV says:

Just curious…what tool is that I see you using to remove the distributor
cap? I see it has a 90 deg bend.

wade3rd says:

You give me the confidence to tackle this job myself. Thank you so much for
your calm tone of voice, and outlined video. Thank you Thank you Thank you.

skiingbump says:

Van As always GREAT video Thanks so much for taking the time to do this so
idiots like us can perform this work …. All the best Ed

Rob Aylott says:

so I don’t need to lock the flywheel if I’m just replacing belts because
I’m not going to take off crank pulley.

Van Svenson says:

There are many good online resources, like Clark’s Garage – do a search.

RjwBrandNew says:
