Porsche 914 – How to Replace the Clutch and Flywheel

Porsche 914 – How to Replace the Clutch and Flywheel

Here’s how I changed out the clutch, pressure plate and flywheel, and adjusted the crank end play on my 1974 914. More info and a link to the engine yoke below…

Ideally, I would’ve balanced all rotating parts with the new flywheel, but that would require a total teardown of the engine, and this being just a mid-rpm street car, I don’t think any imbalance in the flywheel will be meaningful. Fingers crossed!

Please keep in mind that I’m not a professional mechanic and no video can replace proper experience. Don’t attempt this work if you’re not confident in your abilities. As always, be safe and enjoy!

I'm on my third pressure plate, third flywheel, and second disk in my EV 914. I foolishly tried to avoid buying a stage III kit and used stock vw bug parts that I had (my motor adaptor is from a bug). I burned up the stock pressure plate and my first flywheel in a week of driving; then I tried a stage II kit from ebay, that lasted about 3 weeks. Then I finally got the memo and bought a 2600 lb Kennedy pressure plate, an nos flywheel, and I re-used the 4 puck disk. Problem solved, after four motor and transmission pulls of course (the first one was to see what kind of clutch I would need, Porsche or VW).
