Hi Everyone,
The hood (bonnet) struts on the 996TT have been failing and getting to the point that, when cold, will clock you on your noggin! Not fun… In this episode I go through the super easy process of replacing them. Works on porsche 996/986 911/Boxster The pair isn’t expensive and total time is less than 10min!
Tools and parts:
• Porsche 986 996 Front Hood Strut (set 2) OEM Stabilus https://goo.gl/6gC4uX
• Small screwdriver
• Hood Prop
• Cleaning rag
• Dab of grease.
• Safety glasses
Most modern cars are similar – just hunt down the correct struts and you are all set! Older Porsches are similar, but you have to remove and replace a pin instead of ball joints.

Hi Everyone, just a quick video on how to replace your hood (bonnet) struts. Super easy and not expensive. All you need is:
• Porsche 986 996 Front Hood Strut (set 2) OEM Stabilus https://goo.gl/6gC4uX
• Small screwdriver
• Hood Prop
• Cleaning rag
• Dab of grease.
• Safety glasses
This is for a Porsche 996/986, bit it is similar for lots of different cars.
This channel is the gift that keeps on giving! Thank you!
Mine was beginning to loose hold, guide was very helpful, bought those china ones for $8/pair, held up very well Like The Original! Thanks
This was really helpful. Your description was much more accurate then others out there. I did mine and am now all set. Thank you!
Great job explaining!
Thanks for the video. Made the job as easy as possible… done in minutes.
Thanks for the video. I thought there was a retaining clip but you showed it was easy to get off and so job done in under 5 minutes. I also cleaned and greased the ball joints !
Great close up of prying the clip out. That did it for me. Thanks so much for the "details." Great video!!
Really good video shot. Very clear and easy to follow. Well done.
Very helpful thanks !
Keep up the good work!
Thank you for a good video on how to DIY. Saved a good amount of cash and satisfying completing the job without going to a mechanic! Btw my Stabilus shocks came with grease on them from the factory! Thanks again!
Thanks for the video. Just changed them- no problem, no more hood worries
Can you do a video on how to fix one leaking hydraulic for the rear spoiler without breaking the bank?
lol, safety glasses, gloves, i think you should've used a welding mask too and a fireproof suit
Awesome video as usual!!! I have had this issue for a bit and with spring/summer coming this is the perfect time to do this! You made it VERY easy to understand!
Another great video. Thanks so much for making these videos — they are super helpful and always the best Porsche "how to" videos out there.
What grease did you use? Is it really needed? Can I use a spray lube instead?
Love the car hope all has been well!
Love your videos – If you have not already, Could you PLEASE do a video on replacing the front hood struts on your 993? That DIY would be very helpful.
Thanks for the video. Another nice job!
Well, I need to change my M3's trunk struts. But I need a 356 to do the job…lol
Would love to…I was thinking first nice Saturday after Groundhog Day, whatever works best for you. Let's do lunch again soon, though this week is out for me.
Franny, what type of grease are you using there? Was that easier than replacing the decklid shocks on Shamoo2, or roughly the same?
The thumbnail had me laughing! Never realised they were so easy to replace. You can teach an old dog (like me) new tricks!
To prop up the trunk, I usually just put some vise grips on one of the bad struts. I wish I had a 356 to bungy to lol. Great job!!!
