How to replace a radiator on a Pontiac Bonneville 3.8L V-6: Part one “The removal”

How to replace a radiator on a Pontiac Bonneville 3.8L V-6: Part one “The removal”

In this video I’ll be explaining and showing the removal process of a radiator on a 2001 Ponitac Boniville. This task can seem pretty heavy, but in reality it looks worse than it is. Please feel free to use this video as a visual aid in replacing your radiator. By the way this radiator set up has been used on several GM vehicles and the repair procedure is either the same or very simular. So if you have a Buick Centry or a Chevy Impala that was buit around the same time as this vehicle then this video will help.

The auto store told me if I didnt have low coolant sensor. I needed to find out if it was beveled washers or large nuts. I am unsure of how I would go about finding that out or if the lady simply didn't know everything she should.

You also need to shine up the headlights…. you can do it by spraying Off Bug Spray on it and wiping to a shine….I know, I know, they say not to do this as it will damage the plastic…. BUT I have found it does a great job until you need to replace the headlights, and a good place to get replacement headlights is from Auto and Art.com

You can get a new radiator from Prime Choice Auto Parts online for this make and model for about $50 (free shipping).

Thanks so much for this. I have a bad radiator in a 98 Olds Intrique 3800 motor. I know its not the exact vehicle but i'm pretty handy and your video along with my DIY experience should make this a breeze. I recently became an over the road trucker and get only Saturday's free and part of Sunday so I dont have the time I used to have for a whole lot of trial and error. things need to get done fast. I ordered the new rad from rockauto.com and just for kicks I ordered a Tstat and cap as well. Thanks again.

Thanks for doing such a fine job with this video. The portion I needed was the removal of the transmission cooler line. I own a 2001 Impala LS, 3.8 L, which the process is a bit different – but I found the information I needed. Much appreciated. Everyone who posted my vehicle failed to show this important process. Thanks again.

hi how are you doing sir ive just bought a 1996 Bonneville sse will this video also help me be able to remove my radiator as well

frozenfirestix says:

Thanks for the video. Just did it myself, it was very tricky getting the condenser to slide in the radiator slots, but otherwise no problem!

VinylToVideo says:

While in there you better expect to replace every rubber hose and plastic pipe (aftermarket aluminum pipes available) on this system. It will also require removal of the alternator so you might as well replace the belt. I replaced the entire cooling system minus the pump and was still losing a little fluid! AC Delco 3634621 sealant tabs fixed that.
