How to Rebuild a Brake Caliper (WITHOUT Removing it From Your Car!)

It this video I show you how to repair and rebuild a car brake caliper. Refurbishing a brake caliper is a quick, cheap and easy DIY job.

The steps involved are:

1: Jack up the car and support on axle stands (‘crack’ wheel nuts first)
2: Remove wheel
2: Remove the caliper from its mounted position (you can leave the brake line attached)
3: Remove the pads
4: Remove the piston then clamp the brake line
5: Remove the seals and clean up the cylinder
6: Replace the seals
7: Fit the new piston
8: Bleed the brake
9: Clean and de-grease the whole area then re-assemble
10: Test the brakes – if spongy continue to bleed
11: Refit wheel, drop off axle stands, top up brake fluid then test drive vehicle

Why replace a brake caliper when you can refurbish it so easily?

Getting the piston out simply via the brake pressure system is BRILLIANT, no bloody air compressor needed, and no piston shooting out like a 2 gauge shotgun slug…

mst3kpimp says:

good video, brakes popped out my caliper but the only lube you should use is fresh brake fluid, other lubricants may break down the seals. my altima had different outer seals and "Andrew Lewis's" video showed how to properly seat them.

Used this guide yesterday to do mine on my BMW E90
Did end up taking the caliper off completely
Changed all the piston and the seal that goes over the caliper was so tight I couldn’t even get it to sit perfectly, this was from a repair kit

Put the genuine back on and fitted perfectly, now need to order 2 new genuine seals

Excellent. A great help. A tip to install rubber grommets, just insert its mouth in the hole and then tap it slightly with light hammer. It goes in itself smoothly, don’t need to use screwdriver, it can damage it..very helpful video.. Regards

This was a super idea until I thought about what replacement piston would I use? My caliper so old and rusted, it's anybody's guess what the original piston size or manufacturer is. Thanks from Chicago I liked what you did here.
