Saul’s AUTOTEK, Denver Colorado
The Best Auto and Truck Repair in the Mile-High City
Normally, you see me inside the shop, underneath a car or up on the lift with some fancy piece of equipment. Today, we’re in the parking lot, because neither of these Nissan cars can move under their own power, so no better way to show you of a better example, of how to prevent a good commonality failure.
Both the vehicles that I’ve got my hands on are Nissan products that use a CVT or constantly variable transmission. We’ve got an Ultima and a Murano here. They also use this in the Rogue and several others, like the Maxima and then some. The problem with the CVT or constantly variable transmission is that there’s no actual gears. You’re used to a manual transmission that they call an automatic, where you feel … boom … boom, each gear shifting. Those days are gone in terms of Nissan’s perspective.

Now, we here at Saul’s AUTOTEK had never replaced a Nissan transmission. One more time, we had never replaced a Nissan transmission until 2007. Then Nissan started doing research into their profitability versus reliability and started issuing constantly variable transmissions, knowing that they’re filled with rubber bands that are disposable.

Long gone are the days of taking your Chevy, Ford or Dodge transmission apart, putting all new parts in it, rebuilding it and sending it back to the road, with an American made stamp behind it. If the CVT in your Nissan fails, you write a check to Nissan. Depending on which CVT it is, it’ll cost anywhere from $1,800 to $3,800 for just the part, not the labor to take apart the car and put it in.

The way these vehicles are designed, you must drop the motor transmission and front subframe, as an assembly, in order to remove and access that transmission. The best way to prevent these failures and keep these vehicles in top shape is to get that CVT fluid changed every 40,000 to 60,000 miles.

We here at Saul’s Automotive offer a factory fluid flush for $249, which is exactly the cost of materials to do it because it takes only a few minutes to do, and we want to save your transmission. We have to tell people that these failed every day. We see them as soon as 25,000 miles.
We don’t encourage owners to purchase these vehicles as a result. However, if this is what you’re driving and we need to keep you on the road, our jobs to keep you reliable, cost-effective and safe. Safety being that first priority means, we’re going to replace it and guarantee it works right. Reliability meaning, we’re going to do everything we can to make sure the best product goes in it. The replacement units we go through, we source directly from Nissan. We replace coolers and lines with them, to guarantee perfect new performance. Last but not least, to keep it on the road as long as possible.

See us regularly for those fluid services, and you won’t be in this parking lot getting these phone calls, telling us you need a transmission.

Keep it on the road. We’ll talk to you soon. Call us at 303-919-7769.

Whatever you do don't drive down to Mexico and leave the keys in it while you have a couple of drinks.

joe magwood says:

My question to Nissan do you tell this to customers before they buy one.

Gregory Perkins says:

The band is Kevlar and metal

cesar contreras says:

So what's a great reliable car or car bran that won't break in any major part ? Like the transmission, motor etc.

Martijn Hoogesteger says:

But if they go out at 25k miles how can I replace the fluid every 40k to 60k miles???

DANNY NANDKUMAR says:

Wow great video Nissan are junk now. In the mechanic industry it is not good to flush transmissions because internal damage can happen so i guess the cvt nissan now flushes transmissions. Nissan should start making trnasmissions like in the old days not gonna happen

Tyson Hopper says:

NISSAN WILL HELP U… but you have to make them.
My warranty covered me until 100,000. At 65k my transmission began failing/slipping. So I drove it out until 89k to get as much life out of it as possible. They installed a new one for free. Now at 112k my warranty is over and the new transmission is failing after only 22k. I opened a case with Nissan consumer affairs and said this is ridiculous. They responded agreeing to help me outside of my warranty by paying half of the quoted $3400 CVT replacement job so $1700. I respond saying that I will only pay $1000 bcs the CVTs are garbage. They happily accepted my offer and helped me outside of warranty and will even provide a rental car. They are already being sued for the CVTs so they are trying to step up and help ppl. The consumer affairs rep was very honest and helpful. It’s one less person getting in the class action lawsuit so it helps them in the long run I guess lol. Good luck, just be respectful and stand your ground.

2015 Altima feeling a shudder/ slipping feeling under light acceleration, the tac rpm constantly moving a tiny bit up and down. No CEL on as of now. Is this possible I can change the fluid and be ok or is it to late? Do they usually throw a engine light for a trans code? Just wondering how screwed I may or may not be?

MK 25 says:

I cannot begin to tell you all how truthful this guy is being. DO NOT BUY a vehicle with a CVT. My wife purchased a Nissan Murano with one and i started giving her a weird "jitter/jerking" feeling when she would accelerate. As time went on, it got worse and worse. Needless to say, we took it to quite a few shops and they ALL said the same thing…."Get rid of this before it hits 100k miles and the transmission goes out cause its on its way". Again, DO NOT BUY these! You don't repair them, you replace them. Great video by the way. Super informative.
