Nissan engine stall: A/C clutch seized! DIY repair

Nissan engine stall: A/C clutch seized! DIY repair

My friend’s 2008 Nissan Versa left him stranded earlier this summer in my hometown of Ithaca, NY.

Another shop diagnosed the problem as a seized A/C compressor and quoted a large sum of money and several days wait for the repair.

Let’s take a little road trip and try to get this hot hatchback back on the road for a fraction of the cost!

Enjoy!
Ivan

Nice work Buddy! Ipdm not a serviceable item other than fuses.
Ivan you pour the slab for your new shop and we'll have a meet up one weekend and finish it !!!!!

David Raezer says:

Good job Ivan! Had a old Ford F-250 with a 7.3 drive me nuts with a slow crank no-start. Stupid alternator was seized. If you got the truck running. No noises belt just slid over the pulley. I will take my humble pie served warm!

Atra Hasis says:

The CVT will go next. Ivan will disassemble it on a kitchen table and rebuild it using household items and Ebay parts after Rock Auto sends him components stamped "mADe in TAnA TuVa"

Dave Gibbs says:

Great video! Now I want to replace the ac clutch on my nissan titan just for good measure.

Bando belts are the best

I see a leaking shaft seal in the near future

Offroad Edge says:

Love your work but the camera action makes it hard to watch. I know your working in the "field" so it can be difficult but I feel like the use of your tripod more and less "moving/action" shots would help tremendously. Just a little constructive critique.

Jacques Daoud says:

Keith o Keith o Keith you love to fix thing on pinpoint it i hop you making enough money to replace your tools and open new shop buy good lift very good job wish you luck

Every time you do a video you make it look so easy. Great video. I do find it strange when people get bent out of shape or focus on no shirt….I guess they like it and that puts questions in their minds that make them feel uncomfortable when a person with no shirt on is normal and its just a body. Please keep up the good work.

With people like Ivan, is a prime example why the Russians were able to put a man in space before the Americans.
Figure out a way Comrade, just make it work.

That engine is so small, a rubber belt can stop it. Pretty soon instead of 1.3 they will be .3 monsters.

R. E. Hill says:

Nice one. Any valve jobs/engine rebuilds on a budget in the plans for the near future? My favourite ones… ☺

rickey gresham says:

what brand of snap ring pliers are you using, look like a really good brand.

Carlos Moreira says:

Now he can afford to replace his exhaust.

Ken says:

Why didn't you just electrically manually engage the clutch, Measure the air gap with feeler gauge ?? Add, delete shims… There is a spec for it.. Obviously to many shims = Not close enough (Not engaging won't burn up) vs not enough shims = Burns up again , That's the proper way to check, Ez to do.. Something YOU Def should, do…

Rob Carstuff says:

We need more people like yourself Ivan. Unfortunately mechanics don't want to spend the time to research better/more cost effective options. A lot of car owners are "Slaves" to their mechanics and have to go with whatever they recommend.

zx8401ztv says:

Smashing job ivan, great that it was just the clutch assembly :-D.
Odd that the exhaust pressure is a touchy variable, it makes sense but some cars don't give a dam.
I would prompt them to get that idle pulley replaced, bearings that rattle are a worry.

scuba422123 says:

a shim kit should have came with the clutch kit….but why would need that?

Rookie diagnostics and repairs says:

Ivan, thanks for sharing! Two weeks ago had a renault laguna 3 with a very similar ac compressor, the same fuse under the hood ) The same bearing seized but the belt was able to turn the pulley so it was like a sleeve bearing with a very limited life and quite loud ). Had to reinforce the bearing seat place on the compressor itself using battery and some copper wire and then fixing the bearing with a loctite 638. Can you post part number of the clutch kit? Thanks again
