$1500…down the DRAIN?? (Nissan Alternator Saga -Part 1)

Deja Vu?
Owner of this 2010 Nissan Maxima recently had a charging system problem.
Classic parts cannon: new DEALER alternator and a battery.
Problem came back a DAY later!
Hey let’s throw ANOTHER ALTERNATOR in it! Lasted about 1 HOUR…

Customer is $1500 deep, car is still BROKEN, and dealer says there is a “Problem in the WIRING HARNESS”?? Sound familiar?

OK let’s diagnose this Nissan from scratch and see what the REAL issue is.
This is some crazy stuff…

Shouldn't any Nissan dealer warranty work done regardless of which Nissan dealer did it? I have to have a giggle when people trust a dealer service dept over independent shops, yes there are shiesters all over but never rule them out just because they are attached to a particular make of vehicle, the burnouts are still among us even though probably nobody uses that term anymore, the pot smoking alcohol drinking vocational school dropouts are working on your car, they weren't brought up with the same same do things right attitude that older folks were instilled with, I don't wish to generalize but you see it everywhere you go, kids who can't even get a fast food order right are sometimes moving on to more responsible positions and they're simply not ready for it, there's too much focus on being politically correct or woke than there is on doing a job correctly, as long as you tick all the boxes, transgender gay whatever that's ok good work comes second.

This is why I'm too cheap for cheap parts

Paul Moffat says:

One of my old coworkers, owned a Nissan Altima. He needed to change the water pump. Sounds easy – NOPE! They had to pull the engine out to get access because of the way the car is assembled.

Runco990 says:

OEM, OEM, OEM! Learned that lesson the expensive way. As far as aftermarket alternators… went through 3 in a row where the IC regulator was utter crap, except it shorted with MAXIMUM output!! Got an OEM and no more issues…. I don't know what they are doing with re-man's these days, but it must take an extreme effort to build parts THAT bad! The more I watch these videos, the more I regret getting rid of my 70's car.
The electronics consisted of: RADIO!

Mike Leopold says:

Cool case study so far. (pun intended) Good luck.

TexasVet72 says:

I had to change motor mounts and steering rack on one of these cars. The next time it needs an in depth repair it’s going to the scrap yard. That thing sucked to work on. Pretty sure they used a shoe horn to cram that engine/drivetrain in that car.

TOM2RN says:

Is it possible the customer decided not to have the alternator replaced by the dealership since they felt “burned”. To heck with this, I’m taking it to Ivan where it will be done right. They probably paid a hefty fee to have it towed to you. Testimony to your work.

John Peat says:

We had a car dragged-in this week as a no-start from another garage – dead battery so we traced the battery-drain and isolated it, then we found a "wrong type" relay and finally a missing fuse which finally got the car to start.

When the owner got the bill he queried the amount of time it had taken…

"Your original problem was likely the massive battery drain but whoever tried to fix that used an incorrect relay and also forgot to replace a fuse which took more time to find and fix that the original problem did"

He's off back to the last guy to "have a word" – same guy also gets the job of putting the car back together as it arrived with us as a pile of parts and we're doing someone else's part-finished jigsaws ;0

Mark says:

Never ever buy a Nissan there all junk

Josh McCommon says:

I am questioning circuit integrity because the charger was supplying 14.7 volts at 90 amps ad the car was reporting that as 13 volts and 50 amps so there is at least a volt and many amps difference as well as the butchered pigtail. I think I would be cleaning grounds and ensuring that plug is fixed before going through the nightmare of replacing that alternator so it will be interesting to see part 2.

Sam Rugtiv says:

They need to get a lawyer and take the cs to town .both butcher shops.soup time Ivan

boomer9900 says:

Like some others, I'm concerned that I see no pwm from the ecm. But at the same time the alternator regulator should default to some voltage. And to confuse things even more the alternator was charging when you first started it. I know you will figure it out.

sounds like another stealership….and Nissan, the Japenese Chrysler….LOL

All that crap to save a teaspoon of gas every 100 miles!!!!! More shit to go wrong and cost $$$$$ to fix.. I have a 1 wire charging system on my 1999 s10 w/ a 412 V8…I can change alts in 10 min!!

deepsquat600 says:

Yeah I learn that one myself about 10 years ago replacing the alternator on my Corvette from AutoZone the first one that didn't charge after a 2 or 3 days the second one I put on burnt out a battery because it was throwing 17.5 v at the battery so I took it to a place in Tacoma Washington called sound starter rebuild they fixed it right after that I only take my starters and alternators to the sound starter rebuilt and get it done correctly or somebody actually fixes the alternator not just trying to find a bad part they rebuild the whole damn thing

My crackhead neighbors had this vintage of Nissin. LOL. JUNK

John Fairchild says:

Sounds like to me somebody got a wire misplaced

Ed Reeder says:

Scary how after market parts of all kinds have become junk, Even worse I've run into junk OEM parts too, if you can get them.

Davy Arthurs says:

In the UK it’s not unusual to find that fitting a non-OE alternator to your smart charging system will only end up in pain/more issues than you started with!
