Very informative video!

My 9-year old Samsung HL-P5063 DLP TV, which I’ve never opened the case
for, is still working well. I haven’t even had to replace the bulb yet.

I’m here because, for the last few weeks, the TV has been making a soft
”buzzing’ noise when I turn the power off. The buzzing lasts for about
five seconds and goes from a high-pitch to a low-pitch–as though the fan
is ‘spinning down’. I don’t notice the noise when the TV is first powered
on nor when it’s been on for any length of time–even with the audio muted.
The color and brightness are still good.

IMO, the fan is either failing…or (more likely) is dusty–along with
everything else inside the TV. I don’t *think* it’s an issue with the color
wheel, but I’m not sure.

Any suggestions on how to proceed?

Ok so, I have a DLP Television and we already replaced the ballast and
bulb.. the trouble were having now is that after about 15 minutes (give or
take) the screen will start to mildly “flicker” or “strobe”… it
progressively gets worse until finally the entire screen just starts
flashing in a greenish color all over and “strobing” until we turn if
completely off for a minute.. once we turn it back on, it’s good to go for
another 15 minutes or so.. then does it all over again.. it’s very
annoying.. we don’t hear any screeches or anything coming from the set but
when it does start messing up we do hear a kinda high pitched clicking or
chattering sound but it’s not at a loud volume or anything.. could this be
the color wheel? Or ?? Any help would be greatly appreciated! thanks man!

Nice video.
Honestly though. There aren’t many video I can find that help me understand
how a color wheel works.

I have this projector that seems to be having problems. On occasion the
light bulb turns on and on others the whole thing is on, fans spinning yet
the light bulb doesn’t.
When it does turn on, the ligh bulb’s light is really strong and not
dimming. Of course the hours on it say 9999. Not sure if that’s a bug or
not.

I replaced it once and the same problem occured. Where no light blub turned
on.
So i just sent it back for the time being.
I’ll be testing the color wheel soon. How would I go about seeing if the
ballast is working or not though? I’m guessing it’s either the color
wheel, or ballas.t Yet as mentioned, sometimes the thing turns on and
starts working. If it was the ballast, it wouldn’t turn on at all? If it
was the color wheel, i’d get image problems when the projector boots
completely, yet I don’t.

I’m lost, though your video helped me figure somethings out, thanks.

Does it matter which way you plug the cable that has no connector out of
the two cables? the one that just slides right in?

Can you provide info on the thermal fuse that you spoke about?

Thehooverman says:

what do you think is wrong with my tv it makes a buzzing noise and there is
no picture and restarts. the fans spin.

Eric Bielicka says:

I have a Samsung HL56A650C1FXZA. My TV was working fine;I let my dogs out.
When I came back the TV was off. Tried turning back on and no picture just
a black screen my indicators gave me 3 LED lights meaning bulb is out. Well
I thought I replaced bulb; nothing. I opened the back of the TV and hear a
slight but noticeable noise coming right around the color wheel. My
question is if the fans on the ballast are turning does that mean the
ballast is working properly? Before I change the color wheel?

Grants Pass TV Repair says:

I would suggest you look through the rear ventilation holes and see if you
can notice if the lamp is intermittently going dim. That might help you
isolate the problem down to the lamp driver or lamp, although I’m not sure
a bad lamp could have an intermittent problem.

Is it cheaper to just buy a led tv

Please do! Talk about annoying! 🙂

Need help. I have a mitsubishi 60 dlp tv with black and white dots
everywhere. Could I just the bulb with alcohol or something to see if that
would fix the problem? Or is it the chip that needs replacement?

James Harrison says:

philips 60pl9200d/37 when I turn the TV on the lamp fires up but the screen
stays dark then the power button will start blinking a code sixty five.
Sometimes when I keep unplugging the TV and plugging it in I can cause the
screen to come on for a while even then it will start to flicker green and
eventually go off n start giving me the blue flashing code of 65 please
help with this problem thank you very much.

Hey I have a 61′ HLR6178wx and the left side of the screen keeps flickering
into black and white and blurred out colors. If I give it a solid fisted
tap close to the lamp, the picture goes back to normal for about 10 mins
then back to flickering. Any idea what I have to replace? Thanks.

Mike Ivans says:

Out of curiousity, is yours a Samsung? Just wanted to know if this is a
brand-specific issue, since no one seems to have experienced this specific
image problem (from what I’ve read) except for you and I.

digitalblasphemy1100 says:

I have an Mitsubishi HC1600 and I believed the fan was going out for the
longest time but now I’m beginning to believe its the color wheel. It makes
an annoying whining sound for the last 3 years and hasnt gotten any better
or worse. My question: is there a way to just change the bearing? I work on
cars and four wheelers all the time and don’t understand why no one has
asked this question. Everyone keeps saying “change the color wheel”. Well,
I’m not so rich and I like to DIY. Thanks!

Jimmy Moller says:

Kick in your DLP and get a lcd. (or LED if you have the cash)The cost for
parts on a dlp are ridiculous ,if you can even find them new and buying
salvaged ones is a gamble of time and money. Then you will fix the color
wheel or the ballast and the lamp will blow again. There is a reason they
dont produce dlps anymore. 50inch lcd around 400-500. DLPs are good if you
enjoy taking your shit apart every so often. perusing ebay or amazon, buying
parts and feeling like a boss when it works.Im over it.

Jimmy Moller says:

I have a Toshiba 56 theater wide dlp.It makes a humming noise when running.
I disconnected the lamp ,and turned the TV on and the noise disappears. The
fans all appear in good working order. When I connect the lamp and start
the tv the noise is again present. When I shut the tv off the lamp remains
on for a few minutes and the noise persists until the lamp goes off. Does
the color wheel spin when the lamp is disconnected? Does the color wheel
spin when the lamp or tv is turned off.

Gary Christensen says:

Thanks for your informative video. Replaced color wheel for Samsung
hl-r7178 with new air bearings (old had bearings). Does jumper or something
else need to be adjusted to get tv to turn on?? Thanks Gary

my tv is a 46hm95 toshiba dlp and it cuts its self on and off and there is
sound but no picture the picture never comes on

Glenn Adams says:

I have this exact issue after replacing the lamp on my DLP. Have you
isolated the issue yet?

Grants Pass TV Repair says:

i would suggest you look at the lamp and see if it shows signs of having
gone bad.The glass in the middle of the lamp often shows obvious signs of
having gone bad such as blowing up or bending over to the side. Hopefully
you can find some online examples to compare to yours.

Tonya Leonard says:

I have a Samsung HLR4266W. I was watching it when all of a sudden it shut
off and wouldn’t come back on. The 3 lights on the front of the power
button are on which after researching the manual it tells me that its the
lamp. I’m concerned that it may be something else. When it went out it was
making a very loud revving sound and if you push the power button to try to
turn it back on it makes the same sound. Do you have any suggestions?
Should I try to replace the lamp first or the color wheel?

ArcadeGames says:

Very nice video, very informative, even though I refuse to work on DLPs.

rk0035 says:

I have a Mitsubishi 73″ Dlp, model WD-73638. I just replaced the lamp now I
believe the color wheel is bad. When I turn on the set it works fine for
about 5-10 min. then I get a whining noise and the picture starts to
flicker and colors go bad. Is this something I can do on my own or does it
require a service man. One repairman advised the hardest part is
recalibrating the set.

Eric Bielicka says:

Thank you, I’m going to replace the color wheel this week I hear what
sounds like a bad bearing coming from that area of the TV wish I had more
tools to be able to help diagnose these types of things than guess on parts

rootsdoc says:

I have a Samsung DLP HLN617WX, When turned on there is audio but no
picture, I changed the lamp but still audio but no picture. The lamp light
blinks for approx 1 minute then the TV automatically restarts with the
three lights now blinking, still audio but no video for about 2 minutes
then powers off automatically, the three lights are still blinking. I can
hear the fans running while it’s on. I did not hear any unusual noise
before I lost the picture. Could this be the color wheel? Thanks.

Grants Pass TV Repair says:

I vaguely remember doing a similar reset procedure after trying to figure
out what was wrong with the circuit. Sometimes it really pays to read the
service manual.

Mike Riebenfeld says:

I have Samsung 60″ DLP and the picture has gone to all blue with like a
ghost image , is this a color wheel problem?

Grants Pass TV Repair says:

Sounds like a possible color wheel problem, but that’s just a guess. I’m no
expert on DLP TVs.

Mitchell WildFlame says:

I dont even have a projection tv lol we keep managing to find good older
crt types in the trash (lol who cares about HD) I found a heavy plasma tv
in the trash has lines going down it.. any ideas LINES only start once tv
warms up (about 30 minutes)

Grants Pass TV Repair says:

The fan and the ballast are not one unit. Hearing the fan work doesn’t mean
the ballast is okay. Sometimes a thermal fuse can go out and prevent the
lamp from coming on even if your ballast is okay.
