I have a 1992 mercury 200 xri and I'm having the same issue. My looks a little different but I'm sure the process is the same. Have you done one of those? It looks like I might have to remove the big motor to get to one of the screws.
Do you know if it would be the same process to do this on an 81 merc 200 hp?

How did you get that front screw out? I can seem to get any leverage even with a small wrench
