Re-installing an outboard lower unit

Re-installing an outboard lower unit

In this video I show a few tips for re-installing an outboard lower unit or gearbox. This involves using a rachet strap to support the gearbox while you position the driveshaft, water pump pipe or hose and the gear selector.

Can you please tell me the shift rod height on a 9.9 Evinrude model E10rLEDE. 20”shaft. Thanks

Nathan Mayo says:

I think you just saved my butt. Thanks so much!

Si McMurray says:

How about when the gear box splines don’t line up with the shifter rod? The gear box spline goes about half way into the shifter rod tube but stops about an inch short of going all the way in.

I did this to fix the impeller, installed the lower unit and now I have no forward or reverse gear? WTH?

Gavin Dutson says:

Hi , Thanks for the video and instructions , I am having difficulty with the gear selector on my Mercury 90 goldband . I am unable to find nuetral once the drive shaft is back together .
Does it matter if the gear selector on the lower side is wound left or right .

Any advice would be great!

keimolantio says:

Great! I just had a warning sound from the engine indicating overheating. No water was coming from the engine, so impeller is finished. Is the -99 100hp Yamaha engine similar? So just putting transmission to reverse and then disconnecting lower unit?

Connor Lohse says:

I have a new lower unit to replace the old one, my question is: before my old lower unit failed, I was in neutral. Currently still in neutral, and I’m not sure if it will even shift into gear due to my current lower unit problem. Is there a way for me to manually adjust my new unit (or old one) into gear (forward or reverse?) so that I can correctly line up the drive shaft?

I just wanted to say thanks. I have watched dozens of your videos and have learned so much. You have enabled me to work on my own equipment without having to rely on a slow and expensive dealership mechanic. Thanks again!

Wayne Baker says:

Dude! I have been regretting doing my second impeller change out in 3 years on the same 90 Yamy. Took the third person that helped me to get it aligned. For some reason with him we hoisted up and slid right in.
This trick has encouraged me and as a matter of fact I’m gonna do it right now. Thanks for teaching us home mechanics something we should have already thought of.
Power to you!

Brotherman – you have shown what it truly means to "Work SMART – not hard."
In all the years I've been doing this… I never thought of using a ratchet strap.
BRILLIANT! (like when they first put beer in a bottle)

Great video and channel Dangar. I’m searching around for info to help me with a problem. I’m getting a rattling/knocking sound from my 90hk 4-stroke Yamaha. Could you please have a look at my short video and see if its a problem you are familiar with and know the fix for (I’ve put some more info in the video text)? Any help would be highly appreciated.

Love your videos bud, keep up the great job…

Two quick questions..
1- my current propeller reads 9-1/4-8…
Would a 9.25 D x8p fit my motor?

2- my propeller slightly sticks out a bit (almost half way)…is that normal?

Hey Stu, what do you think of the new Yamaha F60?

Video Screen says:

Hi Stu, quick question, i have a 2000 yamaha 6hp, i just put a new impeller kit on it and it doesnt seem to be pumping water anymore i feel like its having trouble pumping the water thru the impeller, when i put the hose on the telltale it flows thru the engine but it seems like its not pumping. Do you have any trouble shooting suggestions to try? thanks for any help you can lend
cheers

Mercury 1984 150 hp outboard motor 2 stroke with 3 carburetors difficult to make it running unless I spry some fuel in to all 3 carburetor than it started up and keep running. But if I stop the motor and let it sat for a couple hours..or next day it did the same thing again. Any suggestion very appreciated.

HTIT PD says:

So far you've taught me to install a water pump, test it, install a lower unit and check a thermostat…keep them coming…cheers!

Anthony says:

Hey I took off my 5 bolts that hold the units together and one of the bolts had thread on it from the inside of the lower unit hole so now when I put the bolt back in it won’t tighten fully , is the 5th bolt necessary?
