Mercury Tilt Trim Motor Repaired & System Bled – TT Works and Motor Runs – Part 3 of 3

Mercury Tilt Trim Motor Repaired & System Bled – TT Works and Motor Runs – Part 3 of 3

I traded my perfectly running 1963 40 hp Johnson for this 1986 35 hp Mercury that has tilt/ trim. Did I make a good choice? The owner gave me $325 to make the trade. So far I found the starter needed replaced and trim motor’s brushes were stuck and very dirty but once I cleaned them the trim motor worked perfectly. Please comment and let me know if you think I made the right choice or not. Also which motor do you think will make a 16 ‘ fiberglass Orlando Clipper go faster the 1966 40 hp Johnson or this 1982 35 hp Mercury?

I woukd give anything for the reservoir threaded cap. Lost mine and can't use my boat until I find one. Ugh

RL MC says:

Mine just start and when is half way stop working until about a minute and then works again.
What could be the problem guys?

Thank you for sharing. I gained some more knowledge.

Hi Again,
I've watched all three of your videos on repairing the trim/tilt unit in a 35 hp Mercury as I also have a 1986-87, 35 hp Mercury 2 stroke. I also purchased the same replacement motor with the pump to replace the original one. The motor is working okay as the large tilt ram in the middle lowers up and down okay, but the two smaller trim rams at the bottom are not moving at all, up or down. Any ideas on that one? Obviously the motor works fine or the large ram would not move at all. Also, the engine does not come completely down. It gets about 90% of the way down but won't move any further even when pushing and opening fluid release valve. Thanks, Paul

Hey just wondering did you have the screw in just at the bass of the electric motor reservoir? The one that allows pressure/fluid out?

Can't tell whether you have it in or not..

I'm going through the same issues with the same engine, but not sure on that part. Thanks for a great tutorial !

L Jackson says:

what type fluid did you use? ATF, hydraulic fluid?

Steve L says:

My tilt & trim is the same here. I have a Mercury 90HP and I lift my engine after about 30 minutes my motor drifts down. Do you think I need to rebuild the whole trim and tilt seals? Just curious. My same motor has a loud rattle at the top end everything is tight. Cover also. Could that be the impeller?

Thanks in advance !

Question..you only fill it from the left side correct, the right side gets fluid from the same left ? Or the right side motor with the small little hole gets filled too?

CSestp says:

I have the same motor, without power trim. I've been having hell figuring out what I need to add power trim to it. Do I need a bracket along with the trim unit? Or will my old bracket work and I just add the trim and wire it?

Jimmy Abeyta says:

Great video Ihave a question I have a 50 horse Mercury how do you change the hydraulic lines on the trim
