How To Replace a 2000-2007 Ford Taurus or Mercury Sable 3.0 Starter

Starter bad? This video applies to all Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable 3.0 V6 engines from 2000 to 2007.  (2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007)

I hope this video can help some of you fix your car yourself, save you money, and build your confidence and DIY skills. Let me know if you have any questions in the comments below!

Note: Take a pic or a note of your vin number when you buy the starter – 8th digit of the vin is a “U” on this car I’m fixing – the parts store cared about this detail when getting me a starter from the shelf. This shouldn’t affect your install though, just make sure to get the right part!

So how long did it take to change the start? A garage said 1 1/2 hrs, book time.

Danny Doughboy says:

Did you have to jack the car up first? Or can this be done all from the top? Thank you just subbed!

Jennifer Hatala says:

Thank you for this! I feel like I can replace the starter in my car without much difficulty now.

BJ Alexander says:

Hey there I'm having a little problem and was told that it could be my starter solenoid. When my car is in park or neutral it makes a skretching slight grinding noise that makes my headlights go dim and my radio speakers make a popping noise. Any advice could help me. Thank you

kvng cloudz says:

looks identical to my taurus its weird thats they made mecury one look same as ford even tho technically ford made mercury

Kenton Kirkpatrick says:

Any suggestion as to preventing oil from ruining the starter? Since the oil intrusion probably happens at oil-change time, what could be done to prevent the damage before it happens? I just had a starter replaced on my '03 Taurus $600+ dollars including tow. BTW, I think Ford should be forced to provide free starter replacements when dripping oil is the obvious cause of failure. What shoddy engineering!!!!!

Jonathan Brett says:

Yo just about to do this to my taurus. Thank you so much.

Don Smith says:

Replacing the starter today on a 2002 Sable. Plan on using a degreaser first to clean off the oil and dirt from the past years. Most starter replacements have the wire that is to be crimped onto the existing wire, but I didn't see that in your video. It also has a warning NOT to remove the new attached wire.

BOomNinjaZ says:

Sorry, I meant the lead cover to prevent metal contact. I think my original cover burned up when my old starter caught fire.

BOomNinjaZ says:

Where would I find the rubber caps to prevent the starter from making contact with ground and catching fire?

Nap Gmoney says:

Appreciate it jus fixed the old 01 taurus up thanks to you. first time workin on a car changing something

Ashton Dawn says:

Where is the location of the top starter bolt

discgolfinrude says:

Bout to embark on this. Seems pretty straightforward as far as engine work goes, at least its in an accessible area. My replacement doesn have the wire is the only thing different from this video

NOBLE WULF says:

Is this the same procedure for a 2004 24v Taurus? Thank you. Great video

T House says:
