Diagnosing a Mercury 110 9.8HP

In this video I show tensioning the recoil mechanism on a Mercury 110 9.8 HP outboard. I also investigate several reasons why it won’t start including inspecting the reed valves.

Joey Spradley says:

For future reference you use the top but to separate the lower unit from the midsection. Just keep turning it up and it acts like a puller.

Johan Visser says:

ALL screwdrivers are "hammerable" (7:58). Some only once though!

ALL 2 stroke Mercury's are hard starting. I've had two now, and sold them both, I hunt Waterfowl in Upstate NY, and the colder it gets, the harder they start. Have since switched to Evenrudes.

BrianRDub says:

There is probably an intermittent ignition issue that you jostled by taking it apart and reassembling it?

Poppa Jay says:

Well, There is 20 minutes gone and we don't know what was wrong with the motor. Cant figure why you posted this video.

Paul Hedberg says:

I have purchased a Merc 7.5 and 9.8 both early 70s vintage. I didn't even know that they were nearly identical except for carburetor jets and maybe a couple other minor differences. They both start but neither pumps water out the spit hole. I have replaced the impellers and run air and then water backward through the system with no hindrance. Do you have any other suggestions as to why water will not flow through the cooling system? This was a great and informative video which I wish I had watched prior to tearing apart the lower end on each two or three times. Incidentally, they both have the 35/1000s larger shaft for the impeller.
