1982 Mercury 9.8 impeller service

I lost the first minute or so of video, just showing the destroyed pump. Boys and girls, change your impellers! The gent who owns this motor hadn’t had it ch…

cpgixxer, I’m looking for 2 stroke 9.8hp and 15hp Mercurys to buy. If you
run across any of these I would appreciate a holler. Thanks. Kept my ’82
9.8 running for 31 years: changed impeller, rebuilt carb, changed ignition
coils and switch box.

AD DENIA says:

1liveandlearn11, all you need to do is tap it down with a nylon hammer, the
rubber gasket is probably stuck but there is nothing other than 2 bolts

alertset says:

I have a 1987 Mercury 20 hp and there is a linkage that needs to be removed
from the top of the motor. I too couldn’t remove the lower unit and had to
take it to a mechanic and he discovered it. It wasn’t easy to unhook the
linkage because it was hard to get at. It was the first time he came across
that model (he works mostly on Johnsons and Evinrudes so he wasn’t familiar
with that Mercury model)

kmajcb says:

well this is the least helpful, no info whatsoever.

kmajcb says:

well friend the thing I’m looking for most is how to remove the LU, I’m
good with small engines but new to the 1975 merc 110 outboard. I got the
thing about replacing impellers but am looking how to remove ,LU from a ’75
110.

Honey Cole says:

cpgixxer how do u put the water line in the top of the water pump..

Honey Cole says:

i had to use a screwdriver and pry mine off.. thrs one bolt under by the
propeller and one on the back

DragonBaine says:

@DragonBaine Thanks! il give it a try! im working on it now! ITS DRIVING ME
NUTZZ!!

Justin F says:

I just got my 9.8 Merc 110 fixed today, and thanks to this video. Very
helpful tips and information. Thanks for posting this.

James Flint says:

cpgixxer, Hate to be the one, but I have a 69 110, and I am not able to
locate the two bolts. Any chance you can help me out? I am a mechanic, but
never worked on outboards. I am ready to SMASH it off 😉

Niklaus404 says:

Ah thanks, i split mine earlier today and the water impeller looks fine, no
need to change it yet. It was a little bit of a milky mess in there though,
i’ll have to track down a new seals kit i think. I had some temporary
trouble with the gears, i must have bumped the shifter rod, i ended up with
2 forwards, a neutral and no reverse 🙂 I’ll split it again later and try
and reallign it.

premiumblend100 says:

doin that is like running a car with no coolant in the radiator. Nothin
good comes from that.

cpgixxer says:

That was so long ago that I don’t remember. Your dealers will know, one
they sell is common and the other is not.

DragonBaine says:

how the heck did you put that thing in? when i turn the impeller on the key
moves and then its messed up

420cliche says:

Omfg the time u just saved me is worth the couple minutes of video for
sure! Thankyou sir!

cpgixxer says:

It’s funny how this vid got 4 dislikes cause i’m missing 2 minutes, if you
can’t remove 2 bolts to remove the gearcase without a video of it you have
more problems that my missing 2 minutes of video lol.

boardfreak9 says:

Which of the two sizes did u end up using?

cpgixxer says:

@Niklaus404 No, the top of the water pump casing just comes off by removing
the top nuts. I used the larger of the 2, the smaller one is quite uncommon
for this motor.

cpgixxer says:

For sure, probably overheating- replace the impeller before it’s too late!

scrappulous1 says:

my motor only runs for a minute or so and bogs down, i noticed it was not
pumping water out would that cause the motor to shut of like that?

Lee Hancock says:

hi i have the 7.5 merc of same age. the water from the tell tale is hot
about 85 degrees C at a guess. also the leg is hot. think it needs new
impeller?

buff985 says:

Thanks for the video, I have the exact same motor, year and everything. I
paid out the nose to have the impeller replaced along with a bunch of other
things (electric box and kill switch). Good to know it’s not too bad of a
fix!

san379 . says:

the shaft is fatter at the bottom and the counter guy gave me the wrong
one.. and that tiny key is a pain in the asss but tell everybody how you
must keep the motor in forward and not move the selector or the motor wont
be in the wrong gear.. took me a while…plus putting the lower unit back
in… pain in ass.. once its very close.. rotate the flywheel a bit and
take a rubber mallet and bang the lower unit and it drops in or flip the
whole motor on the shop floor and work on the lower unit

oneskidoodude says:

Thanks for the video!!!! Fixed mine today. Nice trick with the little dab
of grease to hold the key in place. I used an box end 7/8 wrench as I
didn’t have a zip tie to hold the vains in place. Another place I fought
with it was getting the shift linkage to line up. I used a wire in the side
to lift it up into place and hold it before sliding on the bottom end.
Thanks for the video again!!!!!!!!!

cpgixxer says:

@patrick35495 Some are the same, some are different, hard to say. I’d say
post the question to IBOATS Mercury forums.

patrick35495 says:

i have a 2004 merc 25-how different would this process be

cpgixxer says:

@DragonBaine Put grease on the back of the key and stick it to the shaft so
it stays in place. Take a zip tie and wrap it around the impeller and
tighten it in the middle , tighten it so the vains turn in the direction of
the engine rotation. Drop the bottom half of the impeller into the cup,
lining it up with the key then cut the zip tie and push down on the
impeller, voila!

Niklaus404 says:

Is there a longer vid where you show how to strip it down to the impeller
casing? And which of those 2 sizes did you end up using?
