Hi Mate

I notice your engine check light does not show when you first turn the key.
Mine also does this and I was worried that it was busted somehow. Is this
correct behaviour as I thought they were supposed to show.

Weird as quite a few of my bulbs don’t show even though I’ve tested the
LEDs and they are working. Any ideas? Do these dash units go bad after time?

Mine is also a 311CDI that has done 210,000 miles. (I have an intermittent
oil light problem which is worrying me though. Sometimes comes on when
driving)

Thankyou very much. Quite a lot of people are afraid to do this very simple
job and would rather pay a fortune to a local garage than tackle it
themselves. It really is quite easy and quick to do. I intend making a
video showing how to change the diesel fuel filter next.

Ebay or car shows, they are very easily available, try and Google surgical
gloves, or just Latex gloves.

Three separate “O” rings in three different sizes. Just grab hold of the
old ones, stretch them and lift off at same time. Refit the new rings in
same way, finally after refitting of new O rings and new filter, smear some
old engine oil or even new oil around the O rings and refit the whole
assembly back onto the engine, don’t over tighten ! Job done….

Maybe next time be a little more clear about what kind of oil to use and
what not. You cant find the oil for that van anywhere.

The principles are the same, somewhere you will have a filter housing that
looks similar I would imagine, just a case of identifying it. As for
draining off old oil and replenishing with new oil, well that goes for all
vehicles no matter what the shape age or year. Just locate the sump plug
and oil filler cap and away you go. Just need to make sure you have the
correct filter and oil replacements for your particular vehicle before you
start the job.

@AtanasiuGabriel Mobil 1 and Castrol are both good names in Oil – I used to
use 10W 40 semi-synthetic Commer Oil although some Mercedes people
recommend using plain mineral oil and not semi-synthetic. Dont use Full
Synthetic oil I was told. 10W 40 or 15W 40 oils by any big name are ok to
use. I don’t think you need 0W 40 oil though. I did 300,000 miles on Commer
Oil ( not like Castrol or Mobil but cheaper ) semi synthetic and had no
problems at all. Glad you found the video useful.. 🙂

I went to Mercedes Benz in Chicago for my first 10k miles oil change on
2011 Sprinter. Here is what they did: Changed oil and filter, add some
washer fluid, add DEF fluid. With paying $330 for all of this they also
spilled DEF all over engine compartment so now it looks like snow spots.
They did’t wash my Sprinter. I will change my next 20k and more oil by
myself. I thought that Mercedes splitted with Dodge because Dodge bad
reputation but looks to me that Mercedes is worst.

@Bevoin1970 Thanks. Yes, Poland only seems, but you cannot be confident
that it will be done well. The more respected workshops are more expensive
so you have to pay more, pay less in your friends workshop or almost free
but you don’t know would it be done well or not.

@bikermickyc Sorry about the delay, been away. Thanks for the comments, I
only had the gearbox oil changed once, and a local garage did the job. I
have no idea what was put back into the box regarding types of oil. I was
happy to pay £50 and keep my hands clean for once… 🙂

Thanks Wayne, yes I know its easier to drive to a Garage and let someone
else do the job, however I get too change my oil every six weeks on
average, thats 10,000 miles when Im really busy. I save myself a fortune,
Plus I know the filter has been changed as well, where as in the past I
never knew this because from the outside you cant tell on this particular
engine, and I fear I used to get ripped off. Because the job is so easy it
all makes sense. Thanks for watching Wayne.
