the tie rods are very simple…pop out like a ball joint at the axle and
unscrew from the steering rack end..I have a video on replacing the centre
link ,that has the tie rods replacement on it.as well.
thankfully my head gasket is good (knock on wood)…if you do the head
gasket make sure to soak the crap out of the exhaust manifold bolts with
penetrating oil..not too complicated just time consuming with a lot of
components to remove..take photos so you will remember where it all
goes…and good luck 🙂
thank you so much for making this video. I actually have two
replacementball joints sitting in my garage but was afraid to tackle them
because I heard they were so so difficult to do. Just a question, my ball
joints have been on my w202 c23k for 150,000 miles…would I need a ball
joint separator and installer tool for this job? I heard that you must have
one, but you seemed to just do the job fine with basic tools, no pickle
forks or anything!
The upper bolt and nut move simultaneously when I try to loosen the nut. I
tried to use the jack for stability, like you suggested, but still nothing.
Any suggestions?
the same balljoint was used on almost all models from early 1990s to 2010
.you are correct that only the 4 matic s500 used the old style ball
joint…unfortunately your car is one of the few that used the pressed in
type…you would need a balljoint press to remove and replace it…
I have some play in the front drivers side wheel, from side to side and you
can see it moving where the control arm meets the ball joint, can I just
tighten the nut that’s on the top, after jacking under the joint so that
it’s all the way in.
clunking/noise when hitting bumps or potholes, slightly looser steering
feel..same symptoms for upper balljoints, and to a lesser extent steering
components..if you raise the wheel off the ground and grab it top and
bottom..bad ball joints will allow movement as you try to wiggle the wheel
in and out (pushing in at the top of the wheel while pulling from the
bottom at the same time, and vice versa)
Is this going to be similar to a 2004 s500? I have the base model & it
looks like only the 4matic has a similar ball joint to yours. thanks for
the time on this, it’s really helpful.
@ayung001 it is quite possible you may need a pickle fork after 150k
miles..I have needed one on jobs in the past but can usually get by with
the ball peen hammer…you don’t need an installer either…just make sure
you install upper nut first then the lower ..the locator pin on the lower
attachment may stay attached to the spindle..if it does heat it with a
propane torch and pull it out with vice grip pliers
Awesome videos! I just bought a project c220 and these videos helped me a
lot. How is your head gasket? haha, mine is almost shot and I’m a bit
reluctant to do the job myself. I have a little oil in the coolant (no
coolant in the oil luckily) but I should replace it relatively soon anyway.
Great Vid! hey do you know how to replace the steering tie rods? Just bent
the passenger side one. Total bummer:(
What are the symptoms of bad ball joints? Thanks for your work!
Mine doesn’t need replacing ..but if I get time I can remove and re-install
so you can see how it’s done…it’s a bit fussy but not too hard
Could you make a video of you replacing the center link for steering? i
could really need some tips on how to do it 🙂

very welcome 🙂
got them from rockauto…if I remember correctly they were acdelco

no..once the ball joint is loose it can only be replaced..

do you need aligment after this job ? as usual very helpful video . i ll
never go to a mechanic again as long as you make videos
No worries, i finally found the correct tool for removing it. went off easy

Where did you get your LBJ’s and what brand are they?
try clamping the balljoint up into the spindle with vicegrips or a c clamp
no alignment needed after ball joint replacement
I love you
Thank you very much for video very helpful
