Shaun Long says:

You could of unplugged the sensor right at the mounting bracket

David Prokity says:

Well … the rear is a real job. Remove the 12-point collar nut, then the real axle shaft flange, then the brake cover. Rear Axle is Section 35 of a Werkstattinformationssystem WIS.

Have you ever done a rear wheel bearing? I have a 2003 S55 AMG, and I don’t know how to get at the bearing itself. I have the rotor off, but can’t seem to get at the bearing. Thanks.

David Prokity says:

I cannot diagnose a problem without more information or an inspection but the most likely suspect is the brake switch that activates the lights. The switch is usually adjustable and just may be out of adjustment. If the rear brake lights come on with the key out then there is another issue all together.

LIZ BONFIGLI says:

my rear brake lites keeping coming on when the engine is off…i am going nuts can you help me?

I was surprised to see that too when I replaced my rear brakes. I thought only M5 would have had the vent. I think my car inherited the rotors from early e39 540i’s. Anyway, I think it helps the braking performance somewhat. As for your e38’s, I think that should be standard as well since it was the flagship.

David Prokity says:

You are right. This is rare.

My 7-Series E38 did not.

paulvu66 says:

My E39 2001 BMW 525i does.

David Prokity says:

I do not know of any vehicles that have rear vented rotors. Maybe a Viper or Corvette?

paulvu66 says:

MBz could not even put on vented rear rotors, especially a V8? That is too skimpy.
