Do you have to suck out the oil? or is there a drain plug?

raremountainbear says:

I’m in the Pacific Northwest, too (outside of Tacoma). Where are you
located? I’m wondering if there are any good shops nearby who work on these
old diesels. I have a 1977 300D with a small internal head gasket leak, but
I don’t trust most shops to even touch it. I want to find a reputable place
to pull the head, surface it, and check the piston rings and cylinders for
wear in the process.

My 300d is leaking some oil. My mechanic told me to use a thicker oil
(20w50) + oil additive. Whats your opinion on that? Thank you very much.

melotone says:

Do you suggest using a magnetic oil pan plug? And should the oil pan be
removed for more thorough cleaning – especially of particulates – every 6,
9, or 12k miles? I’m worried that the vertical vacuum pump will leave a lot
in the pan. Thx

I need to pick up one of those oil cap seals. I bought a new cap from
Mercedes (the ones from the auto parts stores just don’t work at all) But I
really like the original metal one because it feels really well made
(unlike the plastic one that I bought from MB.)
