How to repair the scrolling/rotating function on Mercedes-Benz COMAND Multi-Switch Push-Button

How to repair the scrolling/rotating function on Mercedes-Benz COMAND Multi-Switch Push-Button

Problem & Symptoms:
The rotating “scrolling” function of the Mercedes-Benz COMMAND controller stops working. All other functions continue to work.

Cause:
The internal shaft of the controller is prone to breaking after several years of regular use. When the plastic shaft inside the assembly breaks, the rotating function stops working.

Solution:
There is no need to replace the entire unit. Save money by simply changing the internal shaft.

Product Details:
We offer a more durable aluminum version of the same shaft. Machined in USA.

What "metal to plastic grease" should we use for this repair? I've asked around, went to various stores and nobody seems to recall a plastic to metal grease. One mechanic suggested Permatex Dielectric Grease — so that's what I purchased. Will dielectric grease work for this installation?

Jukka Pursiainen says:

What have been the symptoms with your units? Everything else works fine with mine but the vertical down push, which doesn't have an effect.

Sorin Sorin says:

muy bueno.gracias

Waldemar Mish says:

My comment is more related to getting out the command. I found that in w204 one need to cut ribbon connector cable to be able to extract the unit. Afterwards I have rebuild connector and rounder a bit easier way through large opening right next to command. As engineer I cannot believe how original shaft was designed with such a little regards for basic engineering in this case notch effect. It blows me that there are 10 screws holding command together but the key component is so weak. Does not make a sense.

I have a 2012 C63, and the knob doesn't have the gap to get under for removal. I'm trying to follow th video, but am afraid I'm going to break it before it pops, if it pops at all. Any advice on how to remove the knob from the face lifted W204? Thank you.

If I hire a professional to do it, should I find a regular car mechanic or should I look for car body shop to fix it? Thanks!

To remove the "Remove Replace Scrolling Knob Wheel COMAND Command Console Control", this video might help: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gU5NB7jpqOM

Another reason why I won't buy another Mercedes in the future! So many plastic parts and evil planned obsolescence!! Thanks for this wonderful video!

Excellent. The video was perfect and the part works great. Thanks.

Really good video. Bit of a tedious project but worth it in the end because of the quality of your part and the video. Saved a ton of money! Thanks!

What about the newer versions so 2011 and to 2014? I cant take off my top ring.

Piotr Niewinski says:

thanks guys for that hint!

Easiest way to replace for sure!!!!. I would place the 4 (2 part)plastic parts back together before reinsertion as it is easier.

Wilhelm Sorban says:

Thanks! Had it done on my SLK R172 from 2011. Separating the metal scroll was a hell of a job. Took me 40 minutes just doing that. The rest was a piece of cake!

Michael Ward says:

Just installed this replacement shaft. The video made the installation super easy. The only tip I would add is to put the little black levers into the lever holders before placing the lever holders back onto the unit. It saved me quite a bit of grief doing it that way.

Col says:

This video is very useful and actually better than the other one on Youtube that shows you how to do this. I started the job using the other video but I could not get the controller apart so switched to this help guide and it got me out of trouble. Thanks again from the UK !!

climbernl says:

Hello, thank you for the video. Can you also show how this is done for a facelift model (w204 facelift) since the silver knob is different as shown in the video (starting at 0:33) and it's not to be removed in the same way.

Dave auf dem BMW says:

Wondering why my new-to-me 2010 E550 knob does nothing when rotating. This looks doable. There are other videos on how to easily access & remove the unit.
