The Mercedes-Benz S-Class, formerly known as Sonderklasse (German for “special class”, abbreviated as “S-Klasse”), is a series of luxury flagship vehicles produced by the German automaker Mercedes-Benz, a division of German company Daimler AG. The S-Class designation for top-of-the-line Mercedes-Benz models was officially introduced in 1972 with the W116, and has remained in use ever since. Mercedes has been using the two battery setup in the early 2000′ in the sl class and later started intergating it into the S-class, CLS, and various other models.
The Starter battery is supposed to completely isolated from the consumer battery and is designed to start the vehicle even if the consumer battery is almost dead.

Mercedes-Benz
The S-Class has debuted many of the company’s latest innovations, including drivetrain technologies, interior features, and safety systems (such as the first seatbelt pretensioners). The S-Class has ranked as the world’s best-selling luxury sedan, and its latest generation, the W222 S-Class, premiered in 2013. As in previous iterations, the W221 S-Class is sold in standard and long-wheelbase versions; I4, V6, V8, V12, diesel and hybrid powertrains are offered. All models built in Mexico or sold in the United States are only available in long wheelbase.

Wow, thanks for the excellent advice. I just had a local auto parts store replaced a new starter battery for my SL500. The battery warning lights stay on as yours. I just disconnected the negative terminal of the consumer battery then reconnected it back. The warning lights disappear. It works as you said.

Instigator Offshore Racing says:

What if the light doesn’t go off after disconnecting and reconnecting battery

Paul Filidei says:

thanks..but I have one of the First built new Gen 2003 sl500..they came with 2 batteries from the get go..nice tip on video

Joseph King says:

Thanks for the tip! I didn’t realize there was a sequence and your tip cleared up why the battery warning light and the ESP Light wouldn’t go away.

Mike Stanley says:

Very Informative!

brendan ruffin says:

I got a2009 s550 change the battery under hood now car won’t keep charge I had no problems before this can I get some advise please Thanks in advance

Jmluke1 says:

I think what fixed your battery light warning was replacing the stater battery.

Parksy1127 says:

Hello and thank you very much your video worked exactly like you said it would. I wish my local Mercedes dealership service dept would tell me the order to disconnect the batteries and when I asked them about winterizing the vehicle. All I was told was disconnecting the battery was a good idea and I didn’t think about there being a particular order to do that in so thank you very much!

Funkyswisscowboy says:

U should never disconnect the consumer battery and when u change it it should be done with a back up battery. Otherwise u will loose all the programmed memory! Don’t do it and have the reset done by the dealership to get rid of the red battery warning light!

Greg Hansen says:

my red battery symbol still shows up, any ideas?

Miguel Martin says:

Hi couldnt help boot notice your boot liner (rubber) i live in <spain can you tell me where you got it from please

Weapons Education says:

Can I just charge the starter battery?

Maksymilian W says:

Hello mate I has change my battery in sl R230 and I have this battery low indicates in red every time I starting a car.. how can I reset this ??

C C says:

What battery did u use in the trumk. Don't want to pay the high price for the merc battery. Thank u!

El Doctor Tauri says:

I’m gonna try this. I bought an SL500 same issue. So also the key fob won’t work from a distance you have to get really close to unlock, the fuel gauge works sometimes but the little gas light does work even if the needle doesn’t. And my when I try to lower my top there’s no communication (nothing happens and I do the correct steps to lower it) so…. could the battery light be causing this??? I feel like the root of all these issues could likely come from one place. I appreciate your input bro

gta gamer says:

just wanted to thank u. i changed the small battery but didnt disconnect the the main battery in back so the rent battery light didn't go away. so after watching this i unpluged the rear battery and then the front and reconnected them back and now its good

Dardo says:

i have a CL 550 …2010 with no battery in back ……

Foreign Whip NC Sam says:

Great video, I will try this today

Robert O. Akerman says:

Depending on your S500(EU)/S550(US) year model you can have up to 3 batteries.

W220:

Combined Starter/Consumer (trunk right side), Auxilary battery (Driver side instrumentation panel, access from side).

W221:

– Up to -2007: Starter battery(engine bay passenger side), Consumer battery (trunk passenger back right side), Auxilary battery (Driver side instrumentation panel, access from side).

– 2008-forward: Combined Starter/Consumer (engine bay passenger side), Auxilary battery (Driver side instrumentation panel, access from side).

These type of cars with a lot of computers and/or advanced engine setups (read Porsche, Ferrari and so on) should not be left standing without trickle charge more than maximum 2 weeks. A low battery (not drained), can/will manifest in one or several control lights lighting up on your dashboard since computers are having issues reading and reporting values (make decisions). This can happen immediately on the ignition, after a while driving or when you floor it.

A good solution is to add an onboard modern battery/trickle charger that controls the battery health. Connect the car every time you leave it for more than 4-5 days.

Cars up to -2007 provide in my opinion a better setup since The CONSUMER battery is the one being drained, not the STARTER battery or Auxilary. And there are circuits in the charging system that protects the STARTER battery from being drained. Exactly the same way you would find on a boat or a recreational vehicle (house car) with multiple batteries.

Cars 2008- or later have the combined Starter/Consumer battery.

The Auxilary battery is a small battery that supports the electrical gear shift and some circuits in case car have empty batteries and need to be towed. No need to change or touch this and it does not drain the other batteries. Rare that it is faulty.

Check the battery condition charging (alternator) capacity:

– Check each battery with a Multimeter tool. Without any load, they should read above 12.7 which roughly translates to 80% capacity. Lower readings than 12.2 = You need to charge it.

It is recommended to use a proper tool that also load the battery since you want to know things like 'Cold Crank Ampere' (CCA)

– Start the engine and connect a Multimeter tool to each battery. The charging current should now read above 13.8V (preferably +14V)

Battery Change:

. Change separate STARTER battery: Just disconnect and change. Won't affect computers

– Change separate CONSUMER battery: First, add a starter-helper or a separate battery (on the battery cords or via the ODB port (there are adapters)),

so you do not experience a power loss. Because if you do, you need to reset all the settings and most likely have an ODB tool to reset computer warnings.

– Change combined STARTER/CONSUMER battery: First, add a starter-helper or a separate battery (on the battery cords or via the ODB port (there are adapters)),

so you do not experience a power loss. Because if you do, you need to reset all the settings and most likely have an ODB tool to reset computer warnings.

Mercedes is not so helpful when it comes to battery, charging and multiple battery setups in their cars. They expect that since you own this expensive vehicle, you can afford to drop by their service and charge your car there. The handbook states everywhere "Visit Mercedes"… which for a secondhand car owner that bought the car for a fraction of the price, just becomes a tad bit ridiculous. If you own or thinking of becoming the owner of one of these high-performance cars, then please recognise that with great power also comes great responsibility…cost and high maintenance levels, not to be confused with a 'regular' car. 🙂

The S500/S550 has the same/similar engine performance as Porsche 911 Carrera or a Corvette, although it is disguised as a limousine.

thank you for posting

Jules Anderson says:

After disconnecting consumer battery on my SL55 I get an ESP unavailable message. This is perfectly normal and all that is required is to drive the car a few hundred feet to get all 4 wheels rotation info back into the Stability module so it can recalibrate itself.

You will get the same error message if the consumer battery goes flat also.
Nothing to worry about !!
