90-97 Mazda Miata Manual Trans Shifter Turret Rebuild & Replace DIY

Today we show you how to clean or change out a shifter turret assembly on a 90-97 Mazda Miata manual transmission. Not the easiest job but worth it in the long run. A definite guide if you have a broken shifter turret.

NB miatas are different and this guide does not directly apply.

A note: You may have to push the roll pin for the shifter cup out with a punch and hammer, transmissions can vary.

Hey! Have you ever rebuild that trans ?

ClubTōuge says:

How does the turret oil leak into the trans? I've sealed up all the covers on the turret, but when I top it off it'll be empty within a few driving sessions.. with no external leak. Is there a seal in that shifter rod?

Anthony S says:

wondering is it possible to possible take the turret off without dropping the transmission ? need one from the junkyard and don't want to have to drop the whole damn thing if I can help it

Excellent Video. My question is this: What were the symptoms that prefaced your replacement of the turret? I bought a '97 Miata from someone who did almost no maintenance over 15 years & only 16K miles. The turret had about a half ounce of fluid in it when I serviced it but everything seems to clean up fine. I've changed the transmission fluid twice in 4K miles but it still shifts rather stiffly (especially into 5th) and not entirely notch-free. My previous MT was an 07 Civic which was night and day to this Miata. Am I being too critical of the Miata? Will it never shift smoothly and easily?
