Vintage Welder Fixed & Restored LINCOLN TOMBSTONE 225 AC buzz box

Lincoln 225 AC Stick welder saved to live another day.

Supplies you need to use one of these girls.

Welding gloves: https://amzn.to/3r9n1DR
$75 120v stick welder to get you started: https://amzn.to/3dJlSQf

Thoughts:
Had no intentions of saving this old girl and the guy I got it from seamed very knowledgeable. I still can’t believe someone would do such a horrible job wiring the welder. Anyways…. These are fantastic machines but virtually all the old buzz box stick welders of this era were. There were much better more refined machines but these just are the most popular. Size wise they are pretty bulky and heavy. You can get machines that do what these do with electronics vs transformers these days that weigh virtually nothing and cost under $100 but nothing beats an old buzz box.

As I have said in the past, you are one of my favorite YouTubers to watch and learn from but one thing puzzles me , how have you been able to do all these amazing projects in that little shop? I mean everyone else beggs for money and says all the projects are "ours" as long as we keep supporting them, and the next thing you know they live in a big house with a dream shop and most of the video is one big commercial and the content becomes crappy. But all the years I have watched your channel you manage to have excellent content and most of the projects are in the same garage you have always worked from. Thank you for being one of the best.

In 1980s I worked maintenance in small company and they had a lot of these on the benches. The transformers had many taps and a switch to choose which one you wanted. The most used tap was 90 amps and the transformer tap wire for 90 wasn’t that big. A common happening was guys dropping the lead on the bench and shorting out , burning the transformer wire up. Also in our shop they painted machines in the building and the fans got all bunked up with paint overspray.
I had a bunch of beat up machines and tried o make them all work.
I did, but one of them the transformer had a major short and while it would still work, the case was connected to one hot line. Yeouch !

Wow this brings back memories of my youth and lost friends. I can’t watch this I’m going to cry.

Great Job. I have one I found sitting at the curb for trash pick-up. It worked. I am going to put a little new paint on it. I'm curious if you ever lube the bearings on the fan while inside one of them.

I just refurbished one of these. It was more rust than paint and was bolted to a chunk of plywood with one caster still left on it. I replaced the spring in the selector/ pointer with a lighter tension one so that won't break off in my hand. The rest of it is bulletproof. It is bolted to our PTO generator and ready for action.

Thats a Death Trap for sure!!

Is that cooling fan 240 volt? P.S. Love the close-up!

Wish I had seen this video 5 years ago. I picked up the same welder, non working, dicked around with it for a couple months off and on, ended up tossing it before moving out of state. I hate to trash tools, to later figure out it could have been saved.

@jerbear7952 says:

For the love of God don't weld in flip flops. You need something with more protection like a nice pair of crocs or a jazzy little pair of peep toe pumps. Flip flops are for truckers and children at the pool.

@jerbear7952 says:

Does the box need to be that big?

@DJb-ill219 says:

Turned out Great and if I didn't watch this YouTube video I would have never guessed it had been refurbished

I have a ac-225. Stopped working took it apart found one wire loose on the main switch. But found another wire with a eye shape end but can't find where it goes? It comes from the coil thing on the bottom side near the switch. Any help, thanks in advance.

I bought one of those welders for 50bucks 30yrs ago, it worked then, but haven't used it for many years,since i got a mig welder in 2008, but will be in the process of restoring it soon, probably need new cables, but would like to know what gauge the ground clamp and stinger cables are?

@kaneis1 says:

Mine stopped working haven’t been able to figure out what’s wrong with it when u hit the switch no hum or anything but we tested the power when it’s plugged in have power to the switch so not sure what is wrong with it

@engjds says:

Are these better than cheap welding units of today? with this being AC, can it weld aluminium?

@lorenjohns8426 says:

Just bought the exact same thing and this video really helped, also im just starting out welding and bought to practice with

@mickeywragg2770 says:
