1995-2002 Lincoln Continental air spring issue and replacement install removal

1995-2002 Lincoln Continental air spring issue and replacement install removal

Passenger side air spring was noticeably lower than driver side. Air springs had exterior peeling.

I replaced both air springs with factory Motorcraft (Firestone Air Springs). DIRECTIONS BELOW:

This is not coil conversion.

Parts you will need:

1. 2 air springs
(I used factory air springs. However, you can find aftermarket air springs on ebay for as low as $100 each. Just make sure they come with retainer clips and new o rings).
I’M NOT SURE WHAT AFTERMARKET BRAND TO RECOMMEND. I would suggest googling the brand in which you are interested.
2. Dielectric grease for solenoid and o ring lubricant (Lincoln Continental factory service manual requirement)
3. Silicone brake lubricant for solenoid and o ring lubricant (Lincoln Continental factory service manual requirement)

Tools you will need:
1. A jack (you can use tire jack)
2. A jack stand (YOU WILL NEED A JACK STAND FOR THE SIDE ON WHICH YOU ARE WORKING)
a FLAT HEAD SCREW DRIVER OR PLIERS (TO HELP TAKE OFF AIR SPRING CLIP)

That is it! It’s that easy.

Instructions are simple as well.
1. TURN OFF AIR SUSPENSION SWITCH IN TRUNK BEFORE YOU JACK UP VEHICLE

JACK UP VEHICLE AND SUPPORT WITH A JACK STAND OR 2 JACK STANDS (IF YOU ARE WORKING ON BOTH SPRINGS AT SAME TIME)

THIS NEXT STEP REQUIRES THAT YOU DEFLATE AIR SPRINGS ELECTRONICALLY BEFORE REMOVING SOLENOID. I DIDN’T DO AMY OF THAT. IMO, UNNECESSARY.

2. I SKIPPED THAT STEP AND JUST REMOVED SOLENOID BY SLOW ROTATION. AIR VIOLENTLY ESCAPED MANUALLY. SO BE PREPARED FOR THE LOUD POP. THINK OF IT AS OPENING A CAN OF BISCUITS.

3. Remove solenoid.

4. Disengage air spring from bottom and top.

5. Remove air spring.

Clean solenoid and clean air spring mating surfaces.

6. Inspect all o rings and lubricate solenoid sealing area with silicone brake lubricant and dielectric grease.

7. Lubricate air spring o ring with dielectric grease.

Install air springs.

8. Install air spring clips.

9. Jack down vehicle. Your vehicle 1/4 panel should be resting on your tires. This is normal. There is no air in springs.

10. Turn on air suspension switch.

11. Turn on vehicle. Air compressor should start inflating air springs to proper height. This should take a minute or two.

NOTE: IF YOU ARE REMOVING HEIGHT SENSOR, AIR DRYER, OR AIR COMPRESSOR, YOU WILL LOSE YOUR RIDE HEIGHT AND WILL NEED TO RE-ESTABLISH ONE. THIS MEANS YOU WILL NEED TO SET RIDE HEIGHT OF VEHICLE AGAIN OR YOUR AIR SPRINGS WILL BE OVER INFLATED. THIS WILL REQUIRE A TRIP TO FORD/LINCOLN DEALERSHIP FOR COMPUTER PROGRAMMING, OR SOMEONE WITH FORD COMPUTER. IF YOU DO NOT REMOVE ANY OF THOSE COMPONENTS, YOU WON’T NEED TO DO ANY OF THAT.

I didn’t do any of that.

Quick tip, If you plan on doing this just make sure to loosen the solenoid just a little bit so that the air can get out completely. That way you wont struggle to remove the air bag.

For some of those folks who are complaining about the text (watermark) in the middle: This video was permanently edited like that years ago. No way to remove it.

tall bike guy says:

was the solonoid leaking?
my car is only sinking to the ground sometimes all the way on to the axle. when it does not sink all the way to the ground it pumps to the top and when i close doors it goes to normal but when i leave it sinks to the ground but only sometimes? is it solonoid ? sensore or airbag? if it was air bag then the times it pumps up and stays for weeks seems it would sink

Dude. The text in the middle of the screen makes this look very unprofessional.

FWIW, if it's leaking, turn the compressor off the night before. Car will drop overnight. This will leave less air in the system.
