Mechanic quoted me $750 to replace this… Said they had to remove all kinds of stuff including bumper in a 1998 GS400…

This was suppose to be an honest and reliable shop.

FunkyMechanic says:

Look for the diagram in the engine compartment. You may need to remove the top part of the air filter scoop to get access to it. Search for my Serpentine Belt LS430 video as that is its cousin.

FunkyMechanic says:

TW, it should be similar as most of these Lexus (Toyota) engines follow the same design. Look for the diagram somewhere in the engine compartment.

FunkyMechanic says:

It always should. If not… run to a mechanic you trust.

marymcneil1 says:

Can I do it the same way for a 1991 Lexus L’s 400

Thutmose Ward says:

Hi FunkyMechanic, do you know if it’s the same for my 1999 SC 400? I see cracks in my belt and I’ve ordered it, and it should be here in a few days. I would love to DIMyself. So far I’ve changed the oil, brakes, front and rear, repaired a broken antenna. I know it’s nothing to a FunkyMechanic, but to a first time tryer, I’ve got one arm longer than the other for awhile. So doing the serpentine belt would probably keep me from getting my head into my door afterwards, unless I botch it and deflate

datazndood says:

Haha thanks, I thought it was the exhaust manifold but turns out after clogging the tailpipes to locate the leak. It was “whistling” from underneath the passenger side where the 0/2 sensor is. Lets hope that I got it right, for the sake of budget! Thanks again bro!

keithchilds77 says:

If the tensioner doesn’t self adjust what do you do

FunkyMechanic says:

That sounds like an expensive leak. Shop around with the asian mechanics.

FunkyMechanic says:

It sure does. I got a real mechanic to change mine.

mackfar27 says:

Does this engine have a timing belt?

datazndood says:

Hey, a bit off subject but I have to fix a leak in my GS and the mechanic wants $1,300 to install the converter and 0/2 Sensor. Seem out of the ordinary to you, what types of sensors and converters is recommended for our GS’s. (aftermarket ofcourse) Thanks much bro.

FunkyMechanic says:

The intro has the LS and GS. This is for the GS300, per the title above… start the video at 0:40. Enjoy… -FM

chetube11 says:

Im confused The LEXUS in the beginning of the video ISNT THAT a LS ?? NOT A GS300?

chetube11 says:

I have a LEXUS Gs300 does this video apply to that one too?

FunkyMechanic says:

I believe right hand since the tension loosens towards the right. Please confirm with a manual or lexus parts dealer.

obclcopley says:

I need to replace the pulley on the tensioner. Found one for like $26 seperate from the complete tensioner assembly. Do you know if the bolt that holds it (the one that you loosened the tensioner with) has right or left hand threads?

FunkyMechanic says:

If you have a diagram of an accessory or sepertine belt in your hood and the belt itself is visible then it is possible to change. Look for the right part at PartsTrain or Amazon.

aquadasa222 says:

will this work on my 2004 is300? thanks

FunkyMechanic says:

You can find plenty of 2″ or so bars at the Home Depot.

FunkyMechanic says:

The GS is a sportier Inline 6 versus a v6 on the ES300. I believe your real question is… can I use the Drive Belt / Serpentine Belt used in the video? No since it is different for the ES300 Try this link to find your Drive Belt, replace the “(.)”:

FabolousNupe says:

Nice video. I will try this shortly. U have a bando belt. Is that OEM? Anyway, where did u get 2′ bar from?

FunkyMechanic says:

Awesome, glad to hear that!

zakkrick says:

thanks for the video, same engine as the Is300. i could do it myself

FunkyMechanic says:

Coolio thanks for sharing.

FunkyMechanic says:

Hey DataZ – Buy from Amazon use link on Amazon “2 new from $16.89”, not the partners.

datazndood says:

BTW, autozone.com is giving $25 gift card with every $100 purchase, plus free shipping. Just FYI..

datazndood says:

Will the 1940 fit, because within the last 24 hours the price on the 1930 has nearly doubled and the shipping has too..? I’m going with denso spark plugs also, would you recommend? Thanks again..: /

FunkyMechanic says:

Yes the numbers have changed from 1940 to 1930, per Amazon. Use the part validator on Amazon just to make sure. Glad the video helps. -FT

datazndood says:

Is there any difference between 6PK-1930 and 6PK-1940? Cuz in this video you use the 1940, where as the link leads to the 1930. Thanks for the video btw, I’m coming up to 60,000 miles on my 2000 GS and am trying to service everything myself. Thanks bro!

HighVisi0n says:

Great Video ! I have a 2002 Lexus IS300 3.0-liter 2JZ-GE engine, can i follow your video and steps to replace my serpentine belt ?

FunkyMechanic says:

Hey, sorry been away for a while… I’m glad I was able to help you save on this easy maintenance. Stay tuned for more. MMMMMmmmm, I am a Starbucks junkie. -FM

bantruong says:

Excellent. I appreciate it. It’s too easy to bring to a mechanic, which I was about to do. What’s your paypal address? Your next Starbuck is on me.
