Do NOT! Do NOT!!! remove the 4 pan metal screws on the outside of the cowling (plastic cover that sits above the "hump" in the middle) those screws in the 1997 version of the ES300 that he says you may have to move the seats to access, they only hold the center console storage box in place in the console proper. IF you remove them that box can, and in my case DID "shift" or "drop" out of position and then you have an entirely different set of alignment problems which MAY prevent the cupholder from opening AT ALL. I solved the new problem by disconnecting all those electrical leads underneath which allows you to pull the center console entirely, which allows you to install the new cupholder without odd angles… BUT if you don't take out those 4 screws – this video is perfect… easier if you disconnect the electrical leads, BUT I WOULDN'T HAVE GOTTEN THERE WITHOUT THIS VIDEO GUIDE, so just my 2 cents worth to Clint's mucho-money saving guide.

Thanks Clint!

Did mine today and did it exactly how you instructed. As referenced in the pinned comment above, yes, you don't "need" to remove the 4 screws. However, if you do its not a major issue at all. You just will have to disconnect the plugs underneath the console which will completely free the console for you to take it out. I actually prefer removing it all the way out because you can align the cup holder screws so much more easier with them falling out of place.

Either way there is no harm in Clint's method..just adds an extra step that is not shown (removing the wires).

Thanks again!

Steve Sanouk says:

Thank you so much wish I saw this before I went to the junk yard. I couldn't get it off, now I will.

I'm with Goofy. Great video, and I never would have gone about it as described. And the area under the shifter piece was gross. Even more so under the storage compartment.

BUT, you do NOT have to remove the four screws that hold the inner storage compartment to the outer plastic. Simply unscrew the 2 screws near the shifter, and the 2 under the rear cupholder and unclip the wiring to get the storage unit out. And if you need to take the little fake leather piece off the front of the cupholder like I did, gently pry up the 2 tabs that hold the piece onto the cupholder.

Having a magnetic screwdriver is a near necessity to get the 2 screws in the back of the cupholder.

I have a '97 Toyota Avalon, which, I'm guessing, came out about the time these Lexus' started because it looks just like this. Unfortunately, the reason I was watching was to figure out how to get something out of that console, which slipped in from laying on top of the front cup holder. I'm now guessing that it is probably gone permanently… I cannot tell, from this video, where it might have dropped to. (The transmission?) :::sigh:::

Robert Cuba says:

My 2002 ES has rear a/c vents, not cup holders. Taking out the vents did not provide access to the bolts.

Ray Chiu says:

Thank you for the great info!

Toni Harrigan says:

Very thankful as always with your es300 videos!
My mouth dropped when you removed it within 2 seconds lol. I thought mine was going to snap in half as I was trying to pull it from the console. LOL I was trying for like 5 minutes. I finally got it. And thanks again.

Hi Clint, thanks for making the instructions in your videos, easy to a beginner. I bought a 1999 Lexus ES300 recently. I'd much rather try some things myself save a buck or two, before going to a mechanic shop. Thank you!
