How to Replace Ignition Coil Lexus ES300 (DIY)

Hunter’s car needed an ignition coil replacement. This happens to be really easy on this car if you are on the even side of the engine. The ignition coil takes only 1 bolt to keep it in place. Take the bolt off of the ignition coil then disconnect the wires leading to it and you have it out of the car.

We first had to diagnose whether it was the ignition coil that was causing Hunter’s car to misfire. Fixing an engine misfire can be as simple as replacing a spark plug. Diagnosing and troubleshooting takes a key role in ensuring you are replacing the right part which leads to saving money.

In this video we try to show you the DIY way of fixing your car if you have a misfire. We ended up needing to replace the ignition coil which only takes about 5 minutes if you already diagnosed it as the problem.

This is a 1999 Lexus ES300 that started stuttering. He ran the code (P0302) and it said engine misfire on cylinder two.

We walk you through the steps of what should be tested first in order to limit the amount of money you spend on chasing parts!

Steps:
1) Locate the cylinder in question
2) Check compression
3) Compression should be about 100 psi+
4) Replace spark plug and start engine
5) If misfire persists replace the ignition coil
8) If misfire persists you may have a bad fuel injector?
9) Await a new video because we did not have to learn that far!

Update (12/14/2016):
Hunter had a misfire on cylinder two yesterday so we had to replace the spark plug and iginition coil on that side as well! His rear o2 sensor had also failed. New video to come on troubleshooting an o2 sensor. The o2 sensor can become faulty due to misfiring cylinders so it makes sense that it caused the o2 sensor to fail. Hunter has a bad catalytic converter so he doesn’t regularly know when a new engine code is thrown. (CEL is always on) Being late to the game to fix the o2 sensor is most likely what caused the o2 sensor to fail.
