Discovery1 – Replacing Rear Side Window Seals – Removal and Refit of Window

Landrover Discovery1 – Replacement of the rear side window rubber seals is shown here. After about 18 years they start to split around the corners. Replacing them is a low cost (~£20 each seal) DIY job as shown here. I am not a window or windscreen installer by profession and this was the first time at attempting (and succeeding) in replacing both rear window seals, so this is a possible DIY job for anyone with a bit of perseverance.
Hopefully this will help someone thinking of doing it.

A new seal can be found on eBay here: https://ebay.to/2C9eVlb

It is all done with a headcam, while I was changing my seals, so bear in mind that the video quality may sometimes not be ideal. Oh and please don’t watch it and then moan about it being boring as the clue to the content is in the title.

Good, very good tutorial to disassemble the window. Can't you tell me where to get the new rubber? or the reference? I'm trying to find it but I can't. Thank you

Good video, but I have to tell you most of the time it was a little nauseating the way you kept moving your head around, most of the time I couldn't see what you were doing. I know it was a tricky install, but maybe on the next video try holding your head a bit steadier!
Thanks for this though– I knew you were supposed to use the piano wire but didn't know which side or anything. This explained that very well.

A first class how-to-do-it video- and the first time I've seen the job done single handed. (Right hand window may well need a second pair of hands to get around the back door.)  Also, this is for a 5-door Disco- but for a 3-door Disco, the windows are not the same size, and these rubbers are now apparently obsolete… (Part nos.AWR5386 and AWR5387). I have failed to get them from any of the usual suppliers in UK,EEC or even Aus/NZ. 🙁  I'm attempting the job with off-the-roll rubber (near-equivalent) from MM Seals, via Amazon.)

can you still get the rubbers over there i cant get any in Australia

Pat McMahon says:

Thank God!!! Finally a how to on this. Where did you order the rubber from?????

Thanks for doing this video.  I never think to record my adventures but probably should since it really is a big help to see someone else doing a job.  I have to replace a rear quarter window and couldn't find any videos other than those doing a door and handle set up (electric and manual).

Another drive threw a rock and broke the window and it literally kept cracking until it slowly shattered!

Do you think there is any risk of corrosion by spraying the water where it is trapped between the body and rubber?  I'm guessing since there was no corrosion to begin with it will eventually evaporate off.

Thanks again for doing the video! Big help to me

Lot of work it seems to do it yourself. I guess it beats the $75 fee some installers would charge. Ive got a cargo door window seal to replace. Got the seal already just a bit worried about breaking the glass. Then I'll do the rear quarter seals like in this video. The alpine seals look good yet.

Thank You for the work and the time to record and upload.
