Having your Jeep battery die really isn’t that big of a deal, especially if you have a set of jumper cables handy and another vehicle near by that’s willing to help out. But, what do you do if you’re out in the middle of nowhere and all alone? That just happened to Cindy and I and if you can believe it, on our Jeep JL Wrangler that’s only about two years old! Fortunately, we did have our super compact, Type S Jump Starter with us and that was able to get us going again. However, once we got home, we discovered that our battery still wasn’t holding a charge or at least, not enough to fire up the engine. All the lights worked, the radio played, windows opened and closed and even the dash lit up just fine – there just wasn’t enough juice to get it to get it to crank.

Well, as some of you may or may not know, the Jeep JL Wrangler and JT Gladiator Truck has two batteries under the hood – a large traditional size battery that’s used for cranking the engine and a smaller auxiliary one that powers everything else, including a relay that connects the two batteries together for cranking. Needless to say, even if your main battery wasn’t dead, you could still have problems starting your engine if your auxiliary battery is dead or dying. I should note that we were actually seeing strange messages on the dash EVIC including one for, Aux Switches being temporarily disabled due to “Battery Charging” and another saying, “Service Shifter”. So, when it comes time to replace one, you’re more than likely going to need to replace both and for us, we decided to use the opportunity to upgrade our main battery to an Odyssey. I wish we could have upgraded our auxiliary one too but there really isn’t a whole lot to choose from and so I just got a Super Start Platinum AGM battery (Group Size 400 SSB AUX14) from my local O’Reilly Auto Parts Store. In this video, you’ll get to see just how easy it is to replace the main battery AND what all you’ll need to do to replace the auxiliary one. We hope it helps you out.

What are the battery sizes? Especially the aux one

The Not-So-Ordinary Car Guy says:

I've tried using one of those to jump start my 04 TJ Rubicon and it didn't have enough juice. It was fully charged too.

Evesco11 says:

Great video, I referred to it to replace the aux battery. Thank you!!

avnmech says:

Thank you Eddie, this video was a huge help in getting to me AUX battery in my 2018 JLUSS. I replaced mine with the dealer battery from Mopar, mostly because all other the 14-BS batteries on the market only have a 24 month warranty, where as the Mopar battery has a 36 month warranty, and I he cost was only $95.25, that actually cheaper that the Duracell 14-BS AGM battery that was around $150 at Batteries Plus. I also got a 60 month free replacement Series 94R-60 battery from Rural King, and that was $130. It has 750CCA at 0*, where as the stock only 700CCA at 0*. It's not much, but it's still better than what was in there before.

Excellent video. I just changed out both batteries on my gladiator and without this video I don't think I would've even tried it. Putting that aux battery down there is ridiculous. Only to find out that my 2020 gladiator had a 2015 battery in it. Bottom line, horrible design by Jeep, but if you do have to change it out, this is an excellent guide.

Jenkin says:

Your videos made me save up for a JL

Tom Manson says:

Wow, what a pita! I’m just gonna leave it since I don’t use the auto start anyway. As always, Thanks for the video.

K R says:

Ya I’ll stick with my Camry.

Beto Sanchez says:

I'm getting this message "Aux switches temporarily unavailable while battery charging", I guess I need to change the batteries

Daniel Jones says:

Great instruction, but this makes me want to go to a Genesis Dual battery system just to avoid ever having to do this more than once

Bob Mathew says:

Do you get all the electrical problem that others are getting with JL and JT? Love my Jeep

Eric Parisien says:

These batteries did not last long at all…

David Shettlesworth says:

Awesome video, very helpful! Thanks.

mizzouxc says:

Does the ecodiesel have an auxillary battery too?

Redbelly says:

Great video! We tow our 2020 JLU Diesel and live full time in our motorhome. When something stops working (like batteries) it’s often a huge pain to make an appointment at a dealer for something that may be under warranty BUT you just can’t wait for an appointment on their schedule! Was glad to see your symptoms were the same as mine and it's what convinced me to jump in and deal with the PIA of digging for that second AUX battery! (Fortunately, while diggibng out the main battery, I found out that in the Diesel the AUX battery sits in a compartment just under the main battery!!!) No fuse box removal and pretty actually pretty straight forward! Thank you for taking the time to do these videos! (Any chance you’ve found a firewall mount location for that ARB air compressor on the Diesel yet? ; ) Cheers!

El Mel says:

Very clear and informative video! By the way how often do you change the main battery?

TKO 2016 says:

FCA should fire their team that came up with this design!!!! What a bunch of crap doing this to owners who (like myself) have to change a dead battery. There is a company that offers an upgrade that fits into this space but gets you two batteries side by sideo. This is not rocket science FCA!! Any one want to buy my 2018 Rubicon with only 15,000 miles on it?

Darren Roos says:

For those that don't want to mess with the fuse box you can also access the auxiliary battery by removing your passenger fender and accessing it from below.

Sixman_Up says:

Eddie, thanks for this video! I lost remote start, even though it was still under warranty, I decided to replace the battery with a better aftermarket battery. I hadn't lost the ability to start the jeep, it just didn't have enough ummph to remote start.

melvin5818 says:

One thing for sure i will not cheap out on batteries when i need to replace these i dont want to have to do this again sooner.
