ok the only thing I can think of that i may have done differently is I ran a copper jumper under the pick guard to the neck pickup cavity, and I ran a jumper from the bridge pickup cavity (through the wiring hole) to the control panel with the volume and tone pots? Was this a mistake because if I made a grounding loop that may be why the noise is happening.
So all my cavities are connected, and the bass is dead quite except when I only have one pickup on, and even then its only bad if I’m close to my amp. The one pickup buzz is worse when it in active mode to Did this happen with your fix as well?
I ordered a Jaguar bass 2 days ago so it will have hum aswell. So if I’m correct: shielding all cavities with copper tape + add a bit of copper tape on top of the body in between each cavity and on the back of the pickguard decreases hum significantly already ?
Cheers for the quick reply. All solved. It was the lead. 🙂 I knew I had done it correctly. Cheers for all the videos. Really helped me with upgrading my old bass. Plays better than it ever did.
Working on a little project of shielding my p-pass because of a unwanted hummmm. Anyhow, I have shielded all cavities and the underside of the plate. Hard wired the cavities and run the bridge and shielding to the earth on the treble pot. It is still buzzing like you wouldnt believe. Any ideas? Thank you
Hello davey: My jaguar is a beautiful bass, but after , it had a horrible humm/hiss noise even on passive mode.the paint in the cavities was not conductive. Bot 6 dollars worth of copper tape.i shielded everything possible, horn cavity, pickguard cavity, pickup cavities,jack/tone/volume cavity, checked for continuity between all cavities, where there wasn’t i rubbed harder the copper tape to the cavities.Noise is almost completely gone!! Yours is an AWESOME and really helpfull Video!! Thanks !!
No need to. Single coils always hum. Paint doesn’t seem to do much of a good shielding job. Try the copper tape on top of it as well. Won’t completely stop the hum but might help a bit more.
Hey Davey,
I have a Squier Tele that I have shamefully attempted to turn into an esquire. I notice their is a lot of feedback the bridge and neck pickup cavities all have conductive paint in them as does the main route cavity. I am wondering if I still need to connect the empty neck cavity to the main control cavity to eliminate the noise.
Yup, ran into this same thing shielding an (unshielded from the factory) MIM P-Bass. Took me a while to figure out what was going on – the jack touching the cavity wall. That Jag bass has a lot of wiring!
Nice bass
How do you wire a jaguar bass since i want to do active and passive
Thanks for the vid on the Jag. Got the kit from Stewmac and learned alot from the vid. Whispers from the Jag now and back on the stage! Thanks man!
that happens when you buy anything but the real thing
Professor Davey for sure!

no
it was dead silent after the copper shielding was installed

thanks man I’ve been dealing with this for a while now and this is by far the easiest fix I’ve seen. Really appreciate it.
yes
it completes the circuit
I cant see what you mean by a jumper around 8:24. Is that just the copper tape that comes over the top and into the next cavity?
if it’s all connected to ground 🙂

I would like a sticker. How do I get? I’m in the uk….
Thanks for the info I will get in touch with them

is the pickup wired in reverse.
tuff to say without seeing it and knowing what p bass

they will mail it to ya
google it
great people
Where can I buy copper tape from, do you know if it can be bought at Radio Shack or the source or what ever they call themselves these days?
if the shielding paint is inside each cavity yes, but not as good as the tape copper
could i just run a ground wire from each cavity? rather than add the tape?

great job
ok, thanks 😉
it might turn brown like a penny
that’s about it
Doesnt the copper shielding oxidate?
HUH?
But what about oxidation? If it goes then to your wires it will be messy?
it can’t hurt :)

wow my bass does that… never knew what the humming would come from
