Hyundai did a oil consumption test on my 2013 Sonata, where they monitored oil use for about 2 weeks and
then replaced my engine at 110k miles because it was using too much oil. I've put about 90k miles on the new
engine and burning oil again. I think I'll take a look at the PCV Valve.
Check the high fuel pressure pump on top of the cylinder head. It is activated by the camshaft for GDI. It is held in place by a friction gasket. The gasket can become brittle or crack allowing oil to go into combustion chamber.
I have a 2013 hyundai elantra 1.8 with 138,000 miles. I don't have any of these issues. The 13 elantra was notorious for "engine problems." My belief is the excessive oil consumption is caused by oil buildup on the rings. This buildup is caused by long oil change intervals of 6000-10,000 miles or more and or going 10,000 miles or more between oil changes by constantly adding oil but not draining or changing the filter. Almost all new cars use low tension rings. IMO these low tension rings are extremely susceptible to oil varnish causing the rings to stick and causing oil blowby and consumption.
What I have found to severely mitigate engine problems.
1. YOU MUST CHANGE YOUR OIL EVERY 3000 TO 4000 MILES.
2. YOU MUST USE FULLY SYNTHETIC OIL. 0W-20 or 5W-30.
3. YOU MUST CHANGE YOUR PC VALVE EVERY 30,000 MILES.
4. YOU MUST CHANGE YOUR ENGINE AIR FILTER EVERY 20,000-30,000 MILES.
5. YOU MUST CHANGE YOUR SPARK PLUGS PREFERABLY EVERY 60,000-70,000 MILES.
6. Best to have your transmission fluid drained and refilled every 30,000-50,000 miles.
Do NOT go by hyundai service schedule when it comes to oil change intervals or spark plug changes. These were most likely written by hyundai marketing departments to make potential customers think maintenance costs will be low and not the engineers.
I changed the PCC valve and it made no difference. Still burns a quart a week
I got an oil change 9/20 , bu 10/9 it was empty , loss power , was clicking and clacking and i think it misfired even
I was told to change my oil (fully synthetic $90) every 3750 miles… This engine is trash.
PVC valve replacement wont help (you may as well replace anyway if you are 60-70K on original valve, part is cheap and super easy to replace). CRC intake cleaning wont help. Restore and protect wont help. Once these engines start burning oil, they will never stop. It's an inherent design flaw in the engine. All you can do is check the dipstick religiously and keep topping off, and never go a mile past a 5K (Turbo 3K) change full synthetic only that way if the engine does blow due to rod bearing failure they cant deny you free replacement for neglecting maintenance when they pull the valve cover and check to see if its all sludged up. Also Amazon sells legit OEM filters for 10 dollars give or take, recommended you use them. Dont waste money on expensive full synthetic brands as it burns too fast anyway, Walmart super tech full synthetic is just fine. All Hyundai Theta II GDI engines from 2011 to 2020 for sure are susceptible to this, I cant remember when they finally fixed the design flaw whether it was 21 or 22 model years.
I have a 2011 Sonata 2.4 at 110K. Engine still runs great, but burns a quart every 500-700 or so. All maintenance religiously performed. Gonna ride this thing until the wheels fall off and hopefully get a new engine when it does go soon because the resale value of these cars is garbage due to the engine and the Kia boyz issues, especially if still on the original engine.
Yeahh these cars tend to burn oil alot ,,, thats why its recommended to put mobil 10w30 which is thicker oil for these GDI engines. Where i get my oil change done ,, they go w 10w30 mobil synthetic for my engine and to change the oil every 3K miles becuz of how these motors burn oil quick.
So Handsome ❤
The real problem is a b12 flush should be performed in the plug holes.. crank after it sits a while. All the buildup throws out of the holes. Reassemble. Spray b12 in the throttle body. No more missing. No more plugs burning. Just dont start a fire. Have water nearby
Why is he underwater?
Germany torque spec for the PCV valve … guten-tite
My 2019 sonata SE is losing 3 quarts every 4k miles. Bought it to the Hyundai dealer and they are currently doing a top end clean. They said it’s most likely carbon buildup. Luckily I have 4.5k. Miles left on my extended warranty. So if the clean doesn’t fix it, my warranty will cover a new engine. I currently have 70k miles on the engine… Didn’t even think about it until I spoke to a mechanic buddy of mine and he said it most likely had buildup because the dealer I bought it from was using synthetic blend instead of full synthetic oil.
2013 accent. Looks like oil was burning and finished, there was no oil left. Code: P011B . Something wrong with coolant. Can I still drive to work 20 km? All auto shops closed till Monday
I wish I had seen this vid two years ago when I had oil pouring out of the valve cover on top (2015 Sonata). It cost me several hundred dollars for a new cover, plugs, wiring, and labor. I then drove across the USA 2400 miles, and it only used about 1/4 quart of oil.
I just went to a hyundai dealer yesterday. Service guy said Hyundai has increased the warranty due to these oil problems and will replace the engine. Problem is they will only replace it if it completely seizes up first. At that point you tow it into a dealer and start the paperwork and repairs. Call a dealer to verify this first!!!
FYI there are two possible PCV valve part numbers. 26740-2G000 and 26740-2G600. Prior to ordering a new valve pull the hose and if you have a blue valve (like in the video), you will need 26740-2G600.
I have 2015 Sonata sport. Oil changed every 3000 miles and I always smell oil burning. Bought it brand new. Now it's 2024 what can I do? That the only issue besides regular maintenance like getting new brakes and tires. She passes emissions also.
My '21 Sonata 2.5 smartstream has 79k miles and doesn't use any oil between maintenance cycles. I've changed oil and filter every 5000 since new. These engines hold up if you maintain them.
USA drivers are going to go broke taking care of these new oil burner cars with GDI, turbos, crap piston rings and catalytic converters…These issues are ALL over YouTube!!!!
My KIA started burning oil under 50K miles. Dealer just did a 2nd piston soak after 1st failed consumption test. If 2nd fails I am expecting a new engine.. These new GDI engines and ones with new piston rings are CRAP! You have to take special care with them. MORE frequent oil changes and use TOP TIER gas or add PEA treatments. Drive some place at higher RPMS to burn off carbon!! Take special care or you will pay BIG $$$$$ on new catalytic converters!!
****>>>>> Hey readers. Even some Honda. and Toyotas are oil burners. I know because I have looked at YouTube videos for a whole year on this oil burner issue. Audis and BMW too. It is usually GDI and stuck piston rings. Most time a good B-12 piston soak will free the rings. Others use tough engine flushes.. EPR109, AMSOIL, Liqui Moly etc. Some just put in Yamalube ring free shock treatment . Change your oil at 2.5 to 4 k. Run top tier gas…use Techron gas or other high PEA treatments…and try to rev up engine more to burn the carbon outmore. Use Valvoline restore & protect oil!! FIX it fast before you pay $$$$$$ for a cat converter!!!
Chances are you folks used crap oil, and didn't check your oil. and didn't realize you had fuel dilution which caused issues with the piston rings.
