This is our 2017-2018 Hyundai Elantra tail light removal and, or installation. Removing a tail light from your vehicle is pretty straight forward and although the new and older models have different lights, the process should still be very similar. Most sedan or coupe model tail lights will follow the basic principles laid out in this video for removing a tail light.

A little background on this Elantra, the customer had the bumper completely torn off in their accident. So, there was no bumper to remove. Taillights in general can be a bit stiff or hard to remove. This because they usually are never removed for a long time. The best practice is to use a rubber mallet to hammer the prongs on the back of the tail light to pop it out. Use something that won’t damage the prongs and will allow you to fasten it with a bolt.

For this particular Hyundai, there are two 10mm bolts and the electrical pin that need to be removed. Halfway through the video, we install the tail lights back on. This was part of a rear bumper installation. You do have to remove the tail light is if you are going to work on your rear bumper cover. Under the taillights are one 10mm bolt and two plastic push pins. Once you unbolt the mirror and unplug the electrical wires, you just pull the tail light out and replace it. Very simple and easy, don’t be afraid of this job. The hardest part is purchasing the correct light.

After struggling for an hour and watching every Youtube video let me tell you the easiest way to remove these wretched tail lights. Unscrew the two nuts and uncouple the harness and then try and wriggle the lens free. If like me it does not slide out then get a lightweight nylon ratchet strap, the kind you can buy at Walmart, you may have one lying around your garage. Slide the strap under the pointed side of the lens (closest to the front of the car)- you may have to wriggle the lens while you are doing it to help getting it under. Once it's under the edge of the lens hold the strap taught at both ends above and below the lens and gently pull it forward, i.e. towards the rear of the car and hey presto it comes away, easy peasy! I will cut and paste this on every advisory video for this.

Nichole Wilson says:

The title says 2017-2018 hyundai eleantra, yet when the video starts you say 2014-2016 hyundai elantra. I need to change the tail light on my 2018 elantra, does this video apply?

Marco Bingham says:

for anyone having trouble getting the thing off I just used a pry bar but im sure you could use any sharp edge even a flathead screwdriver and put it on the very top left corner of the corner plastic edge piece that is holding the tail light on and if you pry that outwards the tail light will come off easily

Don Watson says:

Could include size socket and little more explanation

Cristine Tous says:

What the fuck ?? Why u all punch of liers.. It is not that easy to take it off.. U shut off ur cam then back.. A if sudden it is done.. Common..

Steve Blendermann says:

Video is for 2014-2016, not 2017-2018

monica theshyone says:

Why didn’t y’all show the struggle of how to get the thang off. That’s what I would like to see. Me and my brother just spent 2 hours trying to get it off and it’s still on there. Couldn’t do it cause no video on YouTube tells us, what the best way to get it off, is.

Tsvetan Nikoloff says:

Mine is so stuck. No way it can come out that easy

Scott Nope says:

Nice jump cut, hiding the wrench that popped out the light from the clips. There should be a snap when the clips are released.

How I move the front one

Rose Clouds says:

I couldn't for the life of me get my taillight out. I tried for over an hour. Tried the Nylon straps and everything and still nothing. Didn't want to take it any further for risk of breaking. Gonna have to have the shop do it.

Jose Sanchez says:

What size is the bolt

Point-Man-FNG says:

Wow. You slide that out like butter. I had to fight mines out. Also, i read some of the comments, you guys can barely see the bumper is off and out of the way.

klondike686 says:

Gave up after an hour of wiggling, pushing, pulling, prying, hammering on bolts. All I have to show for it is a small piece broken off the bottom edge of the plastic of the light, and a small chip in the paint. Not willing to do hundreds of dollars in damage to replace a $1.49 bulb.
