I just replaced mine. It was pretty easy however I did purchase the removal tool for the ring which was a good thing. It’s very sturdy and I had a large 1/2” ratchet on it and also had to use a cheater bar and my feet to get that ring to unlock. So I would recommend that instead of pliers unless he just got lucky.

I had to use a special tool for this with a breaker bar , one guy pulling while I hit it with a hammer to lock back in place, not an easy task.
